More discounts from who?

I don't doubt that you can find the phone cheaper in some places compared to the same phone with AT&T and the Next.

I really dont mind paying a couple of extra bucks to get the monthly, interest free loan and trade it in every year, but buying outright is certainly a solid option as well.

Right now I pay $100 / per month with unlimited data.

That's just the base plan? I thought the base plan was usually $40 or so.

I'm on AT&T Next and it says I can't upgrade until June of next year. I've had this phone for over a year now. How can you get a new phone and I can't?
Next program can be 12, 18, and 24 months.

If the complete cost of the phone is paid and I want to upgrade, I don't have to turn the old phone in, correct?

ETA I stopped reading at the post to which I replied.

ETA x 2 My original question was answered as I kept reading.

I just pulled this from the AT&T website- as you can see, the plans are BASICALLY the same, it just enables people to get new phones earlier than 2 years if they want to.

Sales tax is roughly $55 in Caddo Parish (8.6% tax rate), so by the time you pay that it's literally just pennies different.

The original poster's math doesn't add up. If you are buying a $660 phone, then you would have a $27.50 monthly next installment for 24 months. The mobile share price is $40 per phone on top of the mobile share dataplan price (which is based on how much data you want). If you go on the next plan, you pay $15 per phone (instead of $40), so you are saving $25 per month.

So the comparison is:

$200 + $40x24 = $1,160 on the old plan
vs
($27.5+$15) x 24 = $1,020 on the next plan

The next plan is literally the same thing as buying the phone on day one. It's a zero % installment plan.

I've ignored the cost of the data and taxes in both examples since they'd be the same. Also, the $200 plan used to have an activation fee. I don't recall if the next plan does.

It may have changed by now, but I thought the 25 dollar next discount was lower if you were on a smaller data plan <10GB

That could be a kicker, but may or may not apply here

Explain what you think you know about the Next plan so we can correct you and show you why it's not a ripoff.

I have unlimited data and use 50 to 70gb a month. No tethering.

How is the next plan NOT a ripoff?

What the hell are you doing on your phone to use 50-70gb/month?

My 10GB doesn't last long at all. And I NEVER watch videos.

I've gone over for the past several months.

Either I'm getting screwed or something is not right.
Yea, that doesn't sound right at all. Is it 10GB just for you?

I don't do many videos, but I'm always on my phone, a lot. And I max out at 6GB, so something seems amiss.

What phone do you have? On the Android phones, you can set your monthly range to mirror your plan's range, and you can also see how much you've used, and what app specifically is ussing how much data.

I'm sure the Iphone does the same, I just don't know how.

Yes you can still get the discounted phone with the 2 year agreement but you have to do it online and order the phone. Takes a few days to get it. I had to do this with my daughters phone which was eligible for an upgrade.

On the Next, this is correct. If it's completely paid, it's yours.

Less money per customer(if that's even true) does not equal less money if you're getting more customers.

How many more customers would be needed if 100 million people are saving $10/month on the next plan?

The Next plan has nothing to do with data. The mobile share data plan itself is inferior to the unlimited data plan if you use a lot of data. Which you do.

I was on the unlimited data plan on two phones and am saving a significant amount of money on the mobile share plan. But I don't use that much data. If my data usage goes up significantly, I will be behind those who have stuck with the unlimited plan.

I have a Galaxy S5. I guess because I use it for my laptop and my tablet while I'm on the go.

I just upgraded to 20 GB
