Go buy a brand new to the market phone outright on Amazon or Ebay. They often cost more than the carriers sell them for.

That's besides the point.
It cost more than a computer. Even the flip phones that aren't all fancy dancy were still over $200-400 without a contract back in the day.

I don't see how a device that we use everyday, that we put in our pocket, and have multiple opportunities everyday to drop it and break it, can cost that much money and not have some kind of protection built into it.

If i didn't have a stupid arse iphone issued to me by work, i'd have a flip phone, the Rugby, like I used to have, and not worry about it ever breaking, while still being able to talk and text, which is all i do on my phone anyway.

If you think ATT is making too much money off of you by selling a phone for 800, go buy the same phone elsewhere. You can save all the money that ATT was gonna rob you of

I never said ATT was robbing us. Apple is the one making a killing. But to say ATT isn't getting a discounted price would be flat wrong. ATT is profiting on that margin.

What I don't understand is an ipad can start out at $300, but an iphone with the essentially the same technology is $700+?

Go walk into an Apple store and look at all the people buying $800 phones. Are their margins insane? Sure. Is the market allowing it? Apparently.

That second part is true , and I'm really hoping next will help to curb some of that markup

If Samsung, etc, start dropping prices, I'd think Apple would have to adjust, even though they know most users will pay somewhat of a premium.

Congrats on still doing it, but that's a topic for a different thread.

That has changed. No more $100 phones with a renewal. Sorry.

Just suck it up and pay the six to eight hundred dollars for a new phone. It is much cheaper than the next plan.
Aren't you paying the equivalent of that $600-800 on the Next plan? How's that cheaper?

I'm still ticked off at ATT for throttling my "unlimited" data plan

Might try switching to some other carrier

B/c it's being touted as cheaper for me to do the next plan than the old plan. Why would a supplier who's consumers have an extremely high demand for their product, make it cheaper to purchase their product?

I'm pretty sure whoever came up the with Next Plan at AT&T didn't go to a board meeting and say, hey, let's start this nwt business model that's going make us less money than before.

That's where most of the money is being made. The cost to make the phone is probably under $100-200

You get more discounts if you buy your phone outright and avoid next. I have 2 iphones, 15 gb shared data - $120 / mo.

I'm on AT&T Next and it says I can't upgrade until June of next year. I've had this phone for over a year now. How can you get a new phone and I can't?

Supply/Demand

Gaining market share, trying to stay a step ahead of the competition. I'm sure they obviously did their research to understand many folks out there would rather upgrade yearly as opposed to once every 2 years.

With AT&T, Sprint, And Verizon going to these no subsidy plans how badly will it affect the market for new phones.

I know i wont bother spending $800 on a phone when i can get an older but still new model for a fraction of the cost.

Not to mention the upgrades in these new models are never really that great for the most part.

Honestly if it's really that much of a problem go to prepaid. Phones are expensive because people make them a necessity in life. They can literally do almost anything you need..call text Internet GPS music TV videos etc. It just how it is

It's not even close to being that black and white, Simple Jack.

They make money on volume AKA customer retention. This is one more way to keep their retention numbers high in allowing the consumer more options to upgrade much sooner.

They are also no longer losing money on phone subsidies.

I was hesitant to leave the unlimited plan I was grandfathered into, but the 10GB plan I have is wayyyyyyyy more than I need, so the unlimited, for me and my wife at least, is really not necessary.

Less money per customer(if that's even true) does not equal less money if you're getting more customers.

Right now I pay $100 / per month with unlimited data. I paid $200 for an iPhone 6 when it came out.

If I had done the next plan how much I be paying per month now and how much would I have had to pay upfront?

My 10GB doesn't last long at all. And I NEVER watch videos.

I've gone over for the past several months.

Either I'm getting screwed or something is not right.
