AT&T only offering the Next plan now?

I was in the store the other day asking about what I can do to fix my phone, I asked if I could just pay the $200 and renew my 2 year contract. The sales person said they don't do that anymore and that they only offer next plans now. Has anyone else encountered this? If this is true that's B.S. the next plan is a rip off

It's either that or purchase the phone in full.

Explain what you think you know about the Next plan so we can correct you and show you why it's not a ripoff.
Go...

I upgraded about 3 weeks ago on my regular plan with a 2 year contract. They told me about it but I said no. Paid $299 for IPhone 6.

Well, considering the last chat I had with att they confirmed that I was ultimately paying more to be on the next plan. But I'll explain.
24 month installment plan. Monthly payment of $27.50
The monthly discount for being on the next plan is $15.
So I'm still paying $10 more a month on top of ultimately paying $680 for a cell phone instead of $200.

Ok, thanks, I think the guy might have just not known what he was talking about

This.
Just suck it up and pay the six to eight hundred dollars for a new phone. It is much cheaper than the next plan.
Take care of your phone and try to make it last more than two years.

Yea, this is the first phone I have ever broken. Square trade will get my money once I get a new one

My wife and I do it.
Each year in December, we go get a new phone.

No.
1. You don't pay $200 for a phone now. It is subsidized in your monthly bill plus the $200 upfront. You actually pay way more for your phone this way vs the Next plan.
2. The next plans are $15 per device per month plus the cost of the phone divided over whatever amount of time you choose. 12, 18, or 24. If you buy the phone outright it is just $15 per month.
3. If you do the math on both, you actually save a little over time doing the next plan and you get to upgrade more often if you choose.

No it isn't. You are getting an interest free loan on the phone on the next plan.

The plan is not a rip off. The plan you currently have is a rip off compared to the plan they're offering

AT&T : Yes, you do have the $15 discount on your line.
AT&T : That is because you are under an AT&T Next plan.
Me : so the next plan gets me a $15 discount each month, but i am paying $20 a month in installment plans that will terminate after $650 is paid, sooo if i was not on the next plan I would be charged $120 more over two years, but on the next plan i am being charged $530 over 2 years
Me : correction, $27 a month in installment plans
AT&T : I see. That is technically correct.
AT&T : However, if you choose the 2 year commitment, your monthly bill will increase to $15/month. And also, you get to pay upfront device price.
Me : my bill would go up 15 a month, but the $27 installments would be gone, so im still coming out $10 ahead
AT&T : Yes, that is correct.
I'm just going off of the math I have done and the support guy telling me I am paying more by being on the next plan.
If the upfront prices have changed from last time I got a phone ($200) then it's a different story

Everything I posted is how the next plan works.
How much do you pay per line now?

Next plan isn't a rip off nor is it a great deal
It's very comparable to what you had before, but more flexible
It helps people that switch phones often and also helps people that keep phones a long time
It's better for the customer imo

Do you have to pay off the whole $650 before upgrading to a new one? How does upgrading work with these new plans.

This is getting off topic, I was mainly wondering if the next plan is the only option with them now or not.
