Surely there's a moderate temp band on the sides as it goes from hot to cold

Can you imagine your entire existence spent within the narrow confines of the moderate temperature band? I mean, if the moderate temperature band hovered between 70 and 100 degrees F...you could potentially have an entire civilization existing within that narrow confine.

Special excursions into the hot and cold zones would be allowed with special protective gear of course.

Every year without further R&D is another year of advancement that's not gained.

Not to mention when we finally jump back in (God knows when) we'll have to rebuild it from the ground up.

Except the private sector is carrying that torch now. Thanks SpaceX. Thanks Google.

Reality is that we have 4-5 spacecraft docked at the ISS right now

It's kinda anticlimactic tho when you realize we wouldn't get confirmation of landing for 4 years, and it will probably be closer to six before we get a high enough resolution pic of the surface to see detail

Carrying the torch? Yes - advancing fast enough to allow deep space travel, colonies, etc in the next 100 years? Highly doubtful.

Google has a shite load of money, but not full NASA budget money and resources.

When you use phrases like "import hydrogen from Jupiter" referring to terraforming, you are at the same level as the idiots who thought a 1 inch pipe in a drainage was a smoking gun forcgovernment sponsored flooding.

With present technology, it could be reached in 43 years if a probe left today.

How do you communicate with a probe literally light years away?

Actually, the moon is tidally locked to Earth, not the sun.

One side always faces away from earth, but both see equal sunlight.

I guess I'm asking less in a logistical manner, and more in a "what's the point" manner. I guess we could take that technogically with us and apply it elsewhere
