There were a lot at Fort Benning at all of the infantry schools. I would guess at least 10% of every school I went to there was foreign.

Benning also has the School of the Americas.

The answer is no, there are no foreign militaries in the United States although our allies send troops here to train quite often. We have operational combat units all over the globe, no other country has operational combat units in the US

This is the root of my question. I understand allied countries come and use our facilities to train ... but I can bet we aren't just training in the 150 countries we have presence in

My aunt has a housekeeper who's son is career military and was stationed at Joint Base Lewis-McChord with Special Forces. About 7 or 8 years ago, he rescued a child drowning in a river. The river was in flood and it was a heroic act. Someone took some pictures and the locals reported his actions to the local authorities, along with the pics as evidence. He was decorated for his actions and his mother was very proud.

The river was in Djibouti, and the soldier was in civilian clothes when the incident took place. I asked the mother, "what the hell is _______ doing in the Horn of Africa?" Her response was, "Oh, I don't know. He travels all over. I'm just glad he's not someplace dangerous like Afghanistan or Iraq."

We've got our fingers in a lot of pies around the world. I don't know what _______ was really doing along that river, but I'm certain he wasn't there on lifeguard duty.

Djibouti,

Has been the focus/staging point for a lot of our joint efforts with the French, and in countering both piracy and Islamist militancy in the Horn of Africa.

I met some Australians at Ft. Huachuca, AZ that were training to fly drones.

I suppose you ran into some of the non-uniformed Cartel military people around there as well. Those mountains are corridors for humans and drugs from Mexico into the US.

While in the Marines I did a 2 year tour of I&I duty at Lackland Air Force Base and they have an Intel school that's full of training foreign military officers, most notably, Iraq, for some reason. I remember a big stink being made about some air force kid, recruit maybe, punching an Iraqi officer in the chow hall and him getting court martialed for it. I believe he ended up with quite a lot of time in Leavenworth.

I've not read this whole thread, but it seems logical to assume we have bases all over the world (and others don't in the US) for the same reason that neither of the World Wars were fought on US soil. We are pretty segregated geographically from recent theatres of war.

Logistically, why would the UK need a base in the US? (the same can't be said for the US in the UK, where in the past eastern europe has been a hot zone, and now the middle east).
