Thinking about getting back into the hobby, it's been a long time.

I'm thinking about doing a 75 gallon discus tank or a saltwater fish only.

Anyone kept discus before?

I have a 65 gallon that free to a good home. Has live rock and sand in it. Needs heater, pump on the skimmer, and lights.

I've got a 29 gallon with 6 longtail bloodfin tetra and 2 corys (panda and peppered). It's my first foray into aquariums and I set it up because my 2 year old likes fish. I've been a lot more pleased with it since I got rid of the power filter and installed a canister.

I got tired of external filter cartridges and the constant changing so I just started using cotton/synthetic pillow stuffing loose in the external filter. Works like a charm, possibly even better than the cartridges. A lot longer time between changes too since instead of a thin layer of filter material I was putting in a big old handful. A lot cheaper too. A big bag of pillow stuffing from the crafts section of Walmart runs about the same as a single cartridge.

The only fish I miss is my old Oscar. Bought him when he was barely the size of my thumb and he grew to about 1.5 lbs and bigger than my whole hand in a 25 gallon long tank. Prettiest thing too. He would change his colors depending on mood and comfort level. Fiery orange under chin to all along his sides to dark velvety forest green to black to nearly pure white to spots of grey, green, black concentric circles. Hand fed him fishing worms from a bait store, then moved up to goldfish, and then he ate all his tank mates (gouramis and some cichlids).

So you don't run carbon? How often do you do water changes?

I have a 100 long and African cichlids. I also have a little 5 that I keep next to my desk with anubias plants, some Mexican crawfish and a little petricola catfish.

It gets to feel like a bit of a chore at times (the 100, not the 5), but I really don't feel like getting rid of the big tank would be worth it. They don't resale very well, and I've already put a lot of money into it.

Sold a 120 (soft and hard corals and a few fish) a couple years ago. Have a 200 cichlid now. Building a 700 gal now. That'll be the biggest I've ever had. Done just about every kind of tank except cold water tank. I'm just a junkie.

I change water according to how it looks. Seriously.

It's not just the look of the water though it's also the look of the fish (sluggish/active, etc.).

I put zero chemicals in the tank. I don't use a dechlorinator. I let the water sit in open buckets for minimum 3 days before I add it.

Only use high quality food materials and if overfeed get the excess out within a couple hours.

If ya think about it, the ponds, lakes, rivers are chock full of fish. No one micromanages them. As a result I try to be as natural as possible.

Kinda stems from reading Axelrod books when I first started. He's kind of the father of modern aquariums and started before all the fancy equipment and chemicals were around. Herbert R Axelrod, started the magazine Tropical Fish Hobbyist

My man.

Give me some tips with Discus.

Are they as hard to keep as everyone says?

Should you do larger water changes every week?

Did you do bare bottom or do you have substrate?

Have 2 medium tanks with African peacock cichlids in both . Use ehiem external filters and am very pleased with them. Tanks are 35 and 55 gallons. Don't need water changes much. I use water quality strips to determine when,

Ha. I figured that since I was being a dick and trolling people initially, it was fitting. I got the dander up on some Kentucky fans during the Knee Slayer Bowl.

I had a 39 gallon but I got rid of it after my tiger Oscar died. I got him when he was 2 inches long and he was huge when he died.

They are fun fish. One day I was pouring his food into the aquarium and he jumped out and nearly yanked the bag from my hand.
