Posted this wrongly on the OB.
Looking for advice for buying some gear for triathlons.
1. I've only done one sprint.
2. I want to improve, but I am mostly doing them for fun.
3. Since I am a beginner, I want to spend as little as possible. (I did my first one in a bathing suit, running shorts and a t-shirt on my hybrid bike).
It appears I am borderline medium/large. Large might be a bit loose in the waste and below. Medium might be a bit tight in the chest.
Thanks in advance.

Pearl Izumi tri shorts- I have the Select series (cheap) ones and they are fine.
You can get a tri tank top for about $50 more.
I wear my bike jersey- since I'm a 36 waist (yeah, fatty I know- but I'm fast)- the tri tanks are WAAY too tight for my modesty level.
No way on the suit.

For sprints I race in tri shorts only, and just let it hang out, and I'm certainly not Mr. 6 pack, it's just the quickest easiest way. 1/2 Iron tri shorts and tri top. Full Ironman I actually change. I swim in jammers, bike in trishorts and a cycling shirt and then change to tri shorts/trishirt for the run.

Good info. Makes sense too. I don't see myself doing much more than a 1/3 ironman at this point, but you never know. Separate pieces give you more flexibility to be sure.

Then throw on a shirt at the transition?

I only do sprints pretty much. I just go with tri shorts. I threw a shirt on for the bike and run on my first one, since then I just go with only the shorts the whole way through. My group had some tri shorts and jerseys made for our whole group, i think I'm the only one who doesn't wear the jersey, but I prefer to swim without it and just don't like to take the time to put it on after.

No man, no shirt. For a sprint every second matters. Can't waste time changing clothes. Nobody cares about your gut but you. Just roll with it. Hell, it's more aero than a loose fitting tri top of cycling jersey too.
