Apartments near LSU medical in New Orleans

My nephew was recently accepted into LSU medical in New Orleans. He will start this fall and I was asked to help find an apartment. Does anyone have any suggestions or reccomendations in this area of New Orleans. Thanks in advance.

Yes. I recommend and suggest to not live there.
He'll be much better off renting somewhere else in the city and traveling when he has to.

that specific area is in a "Renaissance", and it will continue to develope as the hospital district does. I mean, there's a Whole Foods store on North Broad, so that says a lot. But, it was (and may still be) a horrible area of the city for many years.
Affordable housing in a "good" area would be Gentilly Terrace. He may be able to find a duplex for rent at or just under $1000/m.
Regardless where he ends up, if you're gonna be living in New Orleans, you have to be able to take the good with the bad. And, that's anywhere.

Its a 10 minute commute to school but it greatly lessens the chance he'll be mugged/murdered.

Not near the school. The school offers dorms, but I think that after a year the handful of people in my class that tried them moved out. If he's being funded by his OT baller uncle, warehouse district offers some pretty sweet apartments/condos that are extremely convenient for school. If he's still around college age, Uptown has plenty of housing options and Mid-City (where I lived) is more up and coming and a great place to live. Nowhere in the city is too bad in terms of convenience to the school.
If he doesn't care about being in the city, then honestly you don't have to live right there. Several people lived in Metairie which is no problem after you get a routine down in a few weeks.

All my friends that go there, live in Metairie unless he wants to pay $2K/mo rent.

+1 for River Ridge. I, along with many of my med school/dental school pals, lived in River Ridge during our time at LSUHSC. It's a quick and easy drive to the school. It's also a safer area with less expensive rent.

Thanks for all the suggestions. He's from a fairly small town and everything is going to be a culture shock. I'm sure he'll adapt quickly.

as with much of new orleans, it can vary widely by block even. ive bought in to the area and am very happy despite my block needing some homes renovated.
new business flooding in - several restaurants opened, the whole foods, a new theater coming on broad, new brewery on the greenspace hopefully.....
as a rental thats not sticking around to benefit from the bounce, id say just go CBD, or uptown depending on budget and lifestyle though, for the most part.

All three are on Tulane and like a 5 minute drive from the medical district. I wouldn't walk it though. Those are also not the cheapest places so I have no idea what the desired rent is but those are some nice safe places that are close.

What's his budget? If it's pretty high, I'd live in one of those new apartments in the South Market District. He could walk to school from there and is close to a grocery store, the Superdome, smoothie king center, and the warehouse district bars and restaurants.
My wife goes to LSUHSC and we live uptown, it's not a bad drive, but the street construction sucks right now.
