Pain in my ankles at first.

I take methotrexate, Plaquenile, and prednisone.

Only place with permanent damage so far is my big toe knuckle. It hurts if I'm in work boots all day. My hands and hips are the worst. Hips didn't really start bothering me until recently.

So far as the pain, yeah it hurts. Worst thing you can do, though, is sit still. My hands kill me if I'm doing something with them for extended periods, especially when it's cold or rainy, but I take a break and rub them and then get back to it.

With meds it doesn't have to be debilitating. Without them, you're fricked, most likely, if the disease progresses. It will eventually attack your organs and immobilize your joints.

Do your tendons tend to hurt too? Or would that have nothing to do with RA?

Did your doctor try methotrexate first?

Yes, I was on methotrexate for 6+ months with no relief. Just lots of added lab work. It was required before he could try the good stuff. I was never a big drinker, but nothing makes alcohol sound better than drugs with strict no alcohol rules. I had a full body bone scan before starting treatment to track inflammation.

Autoimmune disease have similar symptoms. Go to your GP, and he/she can run a generic panel to check for the most common diseases. Also, try and find out your families medical history. These issues run in families, so that can get you in the right direction.

I didn't want to take Methotrexate first, so I refused it. I went to a forum and found people had gotten around that and they shared the letters their docs had written to the insurer to get a biologic. My doc didn't think it would work, but I gave him the letter and it worked like a charm. In the meantime, I was on prednisone for a long time. Worked great, but it's awful to take for very long.

OP, what's stopping you from going to the doctor to get checked out?

The fact that I'm currently deployed to Estonia. I'm going to talk to the flight doc on Wednesday and see what my options are here.

From everything that I read, it's not something that you want to wait around on.

I'm so sorry to hear that. That's a bad situation to be in. I hope you can get back here to get checked out. Might not be RA or PA. Hope it's not, but there are good options out there for it.

It can affect your tendons. My achilles was affected, but I stayed in a cast for a long time and it corrected itself so I was able to avoid surgery.

Well, for me, I've been having problems for a while, but on Saturday night after work, my neck stiffened up severely and then both feet/ankles and wrists followed suit. I'm still pretty inflamed, but nothing like the other night. I couldn't do anything to be comfortable but stand, and of course you can't stand all night.

It was probably the most pain that I've ever been in, which after reading several things on the internet, has led me to believe that I might have RA. I'm sure I'll find out what the issue is soon enough.

Psoriatic arthritis is similar and my pain at it's worst was so bad I felt like I wanted to have my limbs cut off. I was inflamed and sometimes very swollen. Any movement at all was terrible. Try some ibuprofen and see if that helps at all. I take 600 or 800 RX sometimes when I have a little flare and it helps, but flares are a far cry from the real pain. Still, it's work a try. Over the counter tablets are usually 200 per tablet, so if I take those, I'll take either 3 or 4 at a time. Watch your stomach, though, because too much can wreck it over time. Better to eat before taking them.

Make sure they document this started on the job. If you are military, and depending on the disease, you could have a difficult time finding a job after you are dismissed. Mornings are very challenging for myself. There is no way I could have a job that requires me to be there early in the morning.

I have relapsing polychondritis with vasculitis. It's an autoimmune disease that affects cartilage and vasculitis affects my blood vessels. I haven't tried Methotrexate yet but I've been on a ton of steroids and chemo . Are you happy with your rhumy? Anyone know of good Rhumatologist in BR area? My doc is out of state and retiring, so I'm looking for one closer to home.

Also, keep daily notes on what's going on with your body. Write down the time that you start to hurt , what the pain feels like, if anything is swollen and did you do anything that could've caused your pain . The more info for your doctor the better . You may want to read about autoimmune diseases and your diet. I can tell you that I don't flare as much with my disease , when I didn't eat processed foods.

I absolutely love my doc and have referred many people to him, all of which came and thanked me. I have no idea if he is taking patients, but Dr. S Shannon at OLOL.

Well, my muscles do hurt, or seem to. My guess is that it's radiating pain and not really muscle related, though advanced RA would start to mess with your muscle, but you would have been asking questions about the pain years ago if that were the case.

Don't get to stressed reading some of the replies. Medications for RA are much better than they were ten years ago.

I don't want any fricking disease bud, but I really don't want one that's not curable.

My neurologist (yeah, it's fun) was telling me that methotrexate could be improved very easily but that it's not a major money maker so the drug companies don't bother. That's nice: y'all have a real medical problem, but we only clear 10% on the drug for it, so it's not worth the effort, unlike the botox wrinkle cream and boner pills that we clear 50% on, so frick all y'all. Kind of like the coral snake anti-venom: it's expensive and people rarely get bitten, so they quit making it. But, since coral snake venom is one of the most toxic snake venoms in existence, if you get bitten, you better call your mother to tell her goodbye. Sorry, Pfizer and Glaxo couldn't make billions of the coral snake shite we don't the gov making drugs, so frick all y'all.

ps, the pharmacist was telling me that fifteen years ago, my methotrexate prescription would have barely met the deductible on my healthcare plan. Now, it costs the insurance company $150. What changed? Nothing except that the CEOs in the drug companies decided they could jack the price and no one in Congress or the FDA would have the nads to stop them.

Probably because when they jacked the price, they sent a percentage to congress and the FDA.

So I'm finally back home and had some blood tests ran and sure enough, I have a high rheumatoid factor... Doesn't mean much yet, but I am waiting on my referral to go through so that I can go see a rheumatologist.

Anyone know if tricare covers biologics?
