Anyone on here stay in McVoy Hall in the period from 1988 to 1990? I'm pretty sure I heard the guy who ran the snack shop there at that time. His name was Al and he was, at that time, partially blind. He called in to the Morning Drive this morning with Jim Hawthorne and Doug Moreau and was explaining how Jim has helped him to "see" the Tigers over the years. It was a good call. I used to visit with him when I lived there and went down to get a Frito pie or something.

I remember that guy...had a couple of friends that lived on the first floor of McVoy from like 87 to 89. Seemed like a fun place to live. They moved there from Power Hall which was a wild place they put mostly freshmen in. Probably a lot of Power Hall Alumni on the Rant. Isn't McVoy back to being a women's dorm?

I'm not sure. It was cool back then because we were surrounded by women's dorms, like Miller and Herget behind us and Blake and Acadian in front of us. It was also next door to the cafeteria so it was extremely convenient. It had a balcony over the water there, and every game day we would get a keg and somebody would grill something. There is nothing more convenient than living on campus for football games.

Who were your friends on the first floor? I think I knew almost everybody on the first floor because I used to work the late late shift at the front desk during the week. Something like 1 to 3 Tues night and 3 to 6 Thurs night. I used to see the funniest sights there with people coming in from being out at night.

Yes, I was in a similar place my freshman year, Kirby-Smith. That place was pretty terrible as I recall. I couldn't wait to get out.

I was in McVoy from 90 to 93.

It was an underrated dorm for sure. Great location. Rooms not so bad.

The one they should never have closed, though, was Hatcher. If I could have lived all four years in Hatcher, I would have. Hell, I would still live there now if I could.

I had a perfect corner room behind a fire door. Quiet, and right next to the stadium.

I did student media back then, and that was right next door.

My incoming freshman class was the last one to live in Hatcher. It's now another office building for faculty.

Yes.

Same here.

But I was in Hodges. At the bottom of the sidewalk between Hodges and the Journalism Bldg

I lived there my first semester Fall of 92. That place was like Revenge of the Nerds. I'll never forget the look of terror on the girls faces that cut through the lobby on rainy days on their way to and from class from their dorms.

Remember the guy for sure. Fritos Pies and a hefty Chicken Fried Steak. Good memories - thanks for sharing

Nope. I lived there my freshman year (2012) and am a guy. It's co-ed. As of the last two years, it's been the dorm for the students that are in the BRCC Bridge program. They live on campus but attend BRCC.

I wish there was still a snack shop in dorms. That would've made the experience a little better.

WTF? Kirby was awesome. Sure it was a dump, but it was Kirby!

I lived there sophomore year ('87-88) as was one of the SOAs the next two years. If you worked the desk we must know each other.

Al was a hoot - made a killing selling cigarettes to all the Herget and Miller girls. He moved the stand to Pennington shortly after I left.

The window to hit on the roughly 1,000 girls from Herget and Miller passing through was from move-in day through the first week of class. After that, dorm rats - at least most of them - couldn't get the time of day.

You shouldn't have let that stop you. You could have still been accepted to LSU in the late 80's/early 90's.

I lived there from 90 to 92. The blind guy that ran the snack shop then was named David Morris. I always wondered what happened to him. He was cool as shite.
