2- My cousin is absolutely a mess. I keep my truck like a pig stie, but whenever I feel bad about it I just go look at her car (it's not just the car, but I refuse to go into her house). She has 2 kids, and between the 3 of them the car is a war zone. Toys, fast food bags, old snacks, etc cover the floor boards in the back just up to where their feet hang from the car seats. Seats are stained with who knows what. Stickers all over the back windows. The front is not much different.
I did research in Hattiesburg during undergrad. Didn't know anybody really, so the other guy in the lab and I became friends. One day we decided to take a long lunch and go play xbox at his house. It was horrible. The entire house was a mixture of legit hoarding, pizza boxes, and paper plates. Hallways, all of the rooms, everywhere...except the bathroom. I guess that was the one place he could clear his head.

I must admit I'm not too proud of how my house looks at the moment... crayons, books, legos, papers, stickers, and diapers (clean ones) on the floors, gift bags and a partially unpacked suitcase on the couch, sink full of dishes, hamper full of dirty laundry (and a dryer full of clean laundry), kitchen counters cluttered, dirty stove, and probably a full trash bag. But I guess I have a valid enough excuse having a toddler and a newborn and a wife recovering from a C section.
Get off the Internet and go clean your house you pig .....

I think my mom probably does. About 10 years ago she hurt her back at work and hasn't worked since. She's become addicted to the pain medicine she gets etc. Really sad she's chosen to live like that, don't see my mom in her anymore, if that makes sense.
We had to send our dog back though from Hawaii since there are only certain months pets can be shipped from here due to heat restrictions. Sent him to live with my mom until we get to Virginia in July. Was home a couple weeks ago though and she wouldn't even let me come over to see him, wanted to meet somewhere else with him.
Worst part, the fricker loves her more than me, walks galore at her house.

Just about every home I saw in the Arkansas-Missouri Ozarks regions was in squalor. I heard this disorder is pretty common among those that like to attach sentimental value to items most other people would consider trash, and therefore they accumulate such clutter for fear of regret if they were to toss it and later wish they hadn't.
Also, many rural people prefer to stockpile on scraps in case of economic melt down and natural disasters. A lot of mountain survivalist types keep metal junk piled up the lawn for this purpose.

ruzil, are you serious? I don't like filth either, however you seem way out of line
I don't think he is out of line. He might have done her a favor.

Perhaps, but still out of line. On the border of "mind your own business" territory. If an employee does a good job at their work, it is not their place to lecture of vehicle cleaniness.

Or at least did her kid a favor.
As someone who grew up in a household which borders in similarity with some of the stories here, I can say with experience that it's a sucky environment to grow up in.

I agree it is not out of line. I would be completely disgusted if I got out of my car at the dentist office at the same time as my hygienist and noticed her car like that. You are letting this person put her hands in your patients' mouths and her car looks like that? Totally his business to tell her something.
I guess the word "squalor" indicates hoarder-level filth, but I am constantly amazed by simply how messy some grown people with nice houses will allow their homes to be. Most of our friends live like we do--you can stop in on any given day and it looks company-ready for the most part. Kitchen may not be spotless if someone has just made dinner, etc., but the rest of the house is neat and tidy.
And then there are a few of my friends whose homes constantly look like they needed an hour before anyone showed up. (And that is when they've invited people over...I shudder to think how it may look with no notice.)

But that is not why (s)he did it, thus my "mind your own business" comment

When I was in middle school I went to stay at a friends house... Probably only like 3 or 4 miles from where I lived. I went to a private school that was full of seemingly well-off people and this friend was no exception. Nice cars, dressed nice, parents had great jobs, etc. His house was a disaster. Trash on the floor and on furniture, dishes all over the place, leftover food still in pots and pans on the stove from God knows when, the beds were just mattresses on the floor in every room.
The worst parts though...both his parents and his grandmother that lived with them chain smoked... The walls were yellow. They had several animals that never went outside, the house smelled like cat piss and cigarette smoke. And it was full of fleas...How the frick can anyone live in a house full of fleas? I waited for everyone to go to sleep and I bailed... Walked 3 or 4 miles home in the middle of the night and slept in the bed of my step dads truck... And have never been so happy to sleep in the bed of a truck.

I have a friend(woman)who is a Hoarder.
Her house is clean, doesn't stink,no bugs. But there are 3 rooms in her house that are full of stuff she put there when she moved in this house.
She has a roomy house that she has turned into a small apartment.

This is how my friend's mother is. Not filth. Just a huge house jam packed with stuff wall to wall. You can't get down halls or into certain rooms or the garage. It's like a 3000 Sq ft home that she lives in alone, and she only goes in her bedroom and bathroom. And she keeps buying stuff she has absolutely no use for. Like baby clothes when all.of her grandkids are teenagers. It's unreal.

I know millionaires who live that way. Generally one the papers has to be a neat freak for sanity to be maintained. In these cases, neither spouse cares.
