Either from yourself or a family member? May have an opportunity with them and I'm trying to get a better idea of what I may be getting into. The idea for now is for this to be a temporary (year or so) gig while I finish up my masters.

With all the rate increases they're laying on folks, that should be a fun gig.

Straight salary? Are you just managing a book, or are you expected to prospect?

Yeah I know that job. The commission is going to be pretty difficult to hit and from what I understand it's not the most favorable percentage. You will also be expected to make a lot of cold calls for your agent which isn't for everyone.
However, if insurance is in your mind for the future, it's a really good opportunity. They'll get you licensed and you'll get certifications all on the company. Plus it gets you experience, which is needed for any field you're considering.

yea insurance isnt necessarily my big plan for the future or anything but its something i think plays into a lot of strengths for me and things i enjoy doing. I have a good bit of sales experiance (retail but still sales) and it goes somewhat well with my undergrad (atmospheric sciences) degree. idk i can just se myself being good at it and liking it. I just wanna make sure im not getting myself into something im gonna have a hard time getting by on.

Are you serious? 40 years of paying them to do, what you pay them to do, when they had to do what you pay them to do, they drop you? That's some dirty business right there.

My dads been an agent for 43 years. I have worked for him the last 20. Tons of cold calls. You will be expected to sell banking products and life insurance. The new agents have to sell these products to get the correct commissions on there p&c business. If you can't sell these to products don't do it. My dad is on the old contract and is not required to push the products to make his commissions. State Farm isn't close to what it was when I started working for my dad.

You'd be better off working at mcdonalds while you finish your degree.
Then after your MBA, you'll be a shoe-in for management.

I use to work at a State Farm office for an agent. Every agent is different, but it is generally a very low salary, with no benefits, plus commission. My agent based commission on individual performance, some base commission on office performance. Depending on how well you can sell life and health and auto loans, your commissions could be very lucrative. I averaged over a $1k per month in commissions before I left.

what was the salery like?

If you aren't a people person and like to sell, don't do it. You will not like it.
Too bad that State Farm Mid South Regional office left Monroe. That and the guide plant helped really kick start Monroe's downfall.
