Bought a house recently and there is a lightswitch that seems useless. Have spent more time than I want to admit trying to figure it out. Attic is over insulated so tracing the wire is going to be a bitch and I have bigger problems at this point.

Anyone else here have mystery switches?

Does it switch a receptacle for a lamp?

Your wife turns it on to let men know you left for work.

I had the opposite problem. In my new house I had no switch to turn off the outside floodlights! I figured out that in the four gang box by my front door they installed a jumper wrong.

That could be possible. It is in the kitchen so it doesn't make much sense, but the previous owner may have had a need.

I’ve got one too...I’ve lived for thirteen years in the house without ever finding what it controls!

We have one in the kitchen. First switch controls the can lights, second switch is wired and capped. If you’d want to hang a light over the island it’s already wired to the switch so you wouldn’t have to run or hunt the wiring.

Do you have a receptacle under the sink?

Yeah for years.

It was in the hall for an outside outlet. Go figure.

The OP's switch controlled your floodlights.

Reminds me of a joke from Steven Wright (popular 80’s comedian with his trademark deadpan delivery):

quote:

In my house there's this light switch that doesn't do anything. Every so often I would flick it on and off just to check. Yesterday, I got a call from a woman in Madagascar. She said, 'Cut it out.'

Does the room that the light switch is in have a ceiling fan?

If not, there’s your answer.

ETA: Nvm actually read thread.

In the kitchen? Will your dishwasher power on if the light switch is in the off position?

The house I grew up in had a useless switch in the kitchen. My parents were the original owners and they didn’t know why the hell the builder put it there.

Yes.
By the front door. I'm convinced it's for some spotlights for the front yard that were never installed

It could control an outlet, we had a switch installed to control an outlet where put up our Christmas tree. Flip a switch and the lights turn on or off.

Or it could control the dishwasher.

In case you change out a light to a ceiling fan. Then one switch operates the fan, the other one operates the light.

Or like somebody said, an outlet under the sink that you would plug a disposal into.

This. Most trac builders do this.
