Going to be in Grand Isle in a couple of months and thinking about renting a kayak and poking around the old ruins. Curious if anyone has explored the area around the fort and Grand Terre.

I used to play around the ruins when I was kid. Bear in mind, I'm ancient.

There's not too much left to it these days. Be careful when you explore it. There's likely a lot of ways you can hurt yourself.

But it is one of the more interesting sites in South Louisiana. Grand Terre is hallowed ground. Have fun!

How did you get to it back then?

That's really cool to hear. I figured it's got to be in pretty bad shape, but to be able to check this one off the list would be awesome.

There is no way you will make it in kayak. I literally would not take that as a dare for 1,000 bucks

I also visited with my family a LONG time ago...one thing I found interesting was that oyster shells were used on the interior...

found out a few years back that I had a 3x great uncle who actually lived on Grand Terre in retirement...

I got to it by way of a 20' bay boat. I was a kid, sure. But I was ballin' out in 1980.

I hope I didn't inspire images of me rowing there or something, like Tom Sawyer. Lol

We used to go out that way in the mid 90's. There was a Wildlife and Fisheries station with a pier we'd tie up to. Then walk our way in. It was cool as shite.

I've heard that the hurricanes have degraded it into pretty much impassible and dangerous terrain. I'd love to see it again but it's probably an easy way to hurt yourself these days.

There's some houses or camps on the southern part of the island near the fort, right on the beach/gulf side. Was looking at Google Earth and they're pretty much in the surf now, but using the timeline tool - holy shite. There was like a football field of beach in front of them just a few years back.
