They are called reel mowers.

Good
The quality of cut is a lot better.
They have professional series with engines over 25k I sell for professional ball fields.
You are not going to beat the quality of cut.

Bad
More blades to keep sharp
You got to push it to cut grass

In your situation it is probably a great option.

What type of grass? I would only use one on fine bladed grass like Zoysia.

keep up with it.

you can always use the weed eater if you have to be out of town for a while or it rains for a week and it never quite dries enough to deal with.

They suck. They don't mulch so the clippings are huge. You can bag, but that sucks. The cut is alright, but some shite gets missed. If the grass gets too long it really sucks. Ever thought a twig could stop you dead in your tracks? It can.

If you are in NOLA I will let you use mine a few times to try it out. I was really excited to get mine, used it about a month.

They suck.

I just ordered a Scotts 20 inch Classic reel mower. I am not mechanically adept, and was tired of spending money trying to fix my gas mowers and their not working when I need them. My plan is to accept that the reel mower will not be a perfect cut, cut the yard religiously, and borrow a neighbor's gas mower when I don't keep up with it or go out of town. At only $130, it is worth a shot to me over paying $300 plus for a new gas mower when my gas mowers are only lasting 2-3 years. Plus I have limited storage so will be easier to store the reel mower. Really looking forward to using it for exercise and being able to mow at 7am if I want without waking the neighbors.

I've used one once or twice. I always found it cut well, but it was a bitch in st. aug grass. Like you better get a running start if your grass is at all long. With the rate grass grows in south LA, you'd have to cut every other day in a st. aug lawn to make it doable.

How well do they work? I live in the city and have a really small yard (maybe 300-500 sq. ft.) but I'm thinking this would be quicker and easier than weed eating the whole thing every 5 days in the summer.

They start at $60 on Amazon. What's the catch?

Bought an old school, Mr. Wilson special for my (small) front yard as well. Works great. No real need to keep it sharpened as the right ones will self sharpen. You better not skip a week though. It will not tackle taller grass whatsoever.

The best looking yard I've ever had was cut with a reel mower. The blades make a clean cut, and don't leave a jagged white scar on the grass blade. Twigs and sticks are a problem, so pick those up first. Mine even had a grass catcher on the back. Wasn't too tough to push if you kept up cutting every week, plus it was like exercising.

Then life got in the way, and the yard was less important.

I have cut my small lawn with a fiskars stay sharp reel mower for the last 1.5 years. It works great provided you don't have many weeds or let the grass get too long. Fiskars stay sharp mower

I use the same model. Love it. I don't even mow all that often and it handles tall grass well. The Scott reel mower sucks. I gave that one away immediately.

Used to have one for about a week. The cut quality was crap and it was an unbelievable pain in the arse to use. I had to go over some spots several times and it still looked bad. It also left massive clippings and actually pulled up some of the grass at the root.

If there are good manual reel mowers on the market, I sure didn't have one. I left the piece of crap that I had at the old house.

They are good if you don't have sticks and debris and just a yard with grass to cut. A large yard may become a pain though

Just tried out my new Scotts 20 inch Classic this week. Grass was a little long and wet but mower still worked well. First I tried it on a high setting, then a couple days later tried it on the low setting. Both worked great on everything except some thin weeds. Really liked not having to start and stop a gas mower whenever I had to walk away for a moment. Neighbors were fascinated by it and all came over to try it out. We will see how it handles the summer grass growth but at the moment I love it.
