Looking at donating hair for my mom. Trying to find a place that will make a custom wig for her with my hair. Having a hard time find a place that does this also it would need to be quick if possible.

I see many options for wigs for kids and I could always donate to something like that in honor of her, but I would like to help her specifically if I could.

You should continue to let your hair grow out... so it can cover that flat arse of yours.

I did a few years ago, but then I read an article about locks for love that made me wish I found another organization to donate to

Yeah locks of love is the worst place you can donate your hair to.

As much as 80 percent of the hair donated to Locks of Love… is unusable for its wigs… Many people are unaware of the hair donation guidelines and send in hair that is gray, wet or moldy, too short, or too processed, some of which is immediately thrown away. Even hair that survives the winnowing may not go to the gravely ill, but may be sold to help pay for charities’ organizational costs.

i think it takes 10-12 hair donations to make one wig,so unless you know somebody, don't think it's possible.i donated mine to pantene...they weren't as picky as other ones...just donating it period is a good thing, and would probably mean a lot to your mom.

I've donated my hair a few times. They need a minimum of 10" I believe, I've also read that might be a minimum of 12" some places. Depends on if its for kids or adults.

If you really need it in a tight timeline, maybe you can donate your hair and then buy a real hair wig for her elsewhere? It would be the best of both without the turnaround trying to find someone to do it and do it quickly. You could take her with you to pick out a style/color she like.

I donated to Locks of love.

But make sure you go to their website and view their guidelines.

My SO donated her hair once to Locks for Love. They took off more than she asked them to so I had to deal with her being a short haired girl for over 6 months. That was brutal. She's not allowed to do that again unless her hair is waaaaaay longer than the amount they need to cut.

This. Many women have highlighted or dyed or bleached their hair or have layers in their hair.....this wouldn't be eligible to use and would be thrown out. So you basically just got a haircut that made you falsely feel like you were doing something to help someone else out.

Unfortunately, you can't blame the organization for getting unusable hair. Its up to the donors and participating salons to understand their guidelines. I didn't donate to them, but I wouldn't fault them, refuse to donate to them over this.

If by "organizational costs" you mean paying execs more money, it's pretty shitty. If it's to sustain the business of making wigs because they don't get enough usable donations, I wouldn't feel as bad. Sadly you don't always get to dictate where or how your donations are used in any organization. I donated hair to another organization, but it was because that's who the salon partnered with.

Yeah everyone just automatically thinks of Locks of Love when they think of donating hair without really researching them. It's kinda like Goodwill. People just automatically think of them when donating stuff without really understanding how they work.

It's still a very selfless thing to donate your hair. You are doing it with very good intentions in mind. Just would suck that your act of selflessness wasn't even used to help others.

My wife has done it a couple of times. She didn't do the Locks of Love, but some other charity that her hairdresser told her about. I forget all the details, but the hairdresser had a relative that had undergone cancer treatment, so she was curious about donating her hair and researched a few of the different ones. My wife went with that suggestion. It was really long to begin with so after they cut off the 8 inches or so she wasn't left with a pixie cut.

I thought about growing mine out last year. My little sister was diagnosed with breast cancer. I was going to grow it out and donate it as a gesture for her, but then I thought it might be kind of mean for me to be sporting long flowing hair while she was bald for several months. I may do it now that her hair has started to grow back.

And I'm just curious, any of you that have undergone chemo and lost hair, or any relatives or friends that you know, when it grew back, was the hair the same? Just asking because my sister always had fine hair that was naturally blonde. It is growing back in curly and brown. It is odd to see her after her whole life she was a blonde.

After chemo it is common for it to grow back curly.

I don't understand how people are still donating to Locks of Love...They are selling the wigs they make for a profit and doing whatever they want with the money.

Pantene should really advertise more...or wait...maybe that's why Locks of Love needs all that $$$$

I got my head shaved at a St. Baldrick's event last March, and I donated the hair to Wigs 4 Kids.
