In the process of getting quotes and info on different alarm systems and I'm interested in simplisafe. Anybody here have positive/negative experiences? I'm gonna go ahead and downvote my own post to get the process rolling.

Get ADT.
Ving Rhames will stand outside your house and beat the ever living shite out of anyone that comes close.

Why do you need an alarm system? What are you trying to hide?

ADT is expensive and locking you in to a 3 year contract is a bunch of crap. The alarm industry is almost as bad as the cable industry.

Almost.

I'm curious to hear about Simplesafe as well.

The DIY installation scares me that it's a piece of shite system. But $15 a month and no contract peaks my interest. Plus it got an A+ on the BBB website.

Use a local company with local monitoring. Keep the money in your community. Don't fall for one of these one size fits all solutions just because they give you free equipment. The equipment isn't free when you have to pay out the arse for monthly monitoring.

That's what I do. Never had a problem. You really don't even need the monitoring. The loud arse alarm will make anyone leave.

Yes and no. In the event of an emergency it's nice to have the police, fire, paramedics dispatched automatically. If it's just me self monitoring is fine but if I have a wife and kids at home the monitoring is well worth it IMO.

I got it two months ago. Works great. Glassbreak sensor worked perfectly when a ball hit my window last week.

TigerWise...which specific local company do you suggest? How long is their contract and how much is monitoring?

The DIY systems you buy the equipment upfront and pay a much smaller monthly fee for monitoring. I am all about local, but comparing $50/month and 3 year contract to $15/month and no contract...sorry local guys, but paying an additional $500+ a year just to keep the money local (which I don't really know is the case) just doesn't make sense to me.

I put in a Simplisafe system 6 months ago. It's very easy to set up and I like that it uses a cell line to notify police. No video is the only downside but I can live with that. Would do it again.

Before I moved here I used a "local company". The owner was a nice guy and they did a good job with the wiring (not needed anymore). And the alarm went out via regular phone lines to New Jersey. And it was more than 3x as expensive per month.

I really don't want to name companies. I work in the A/V and security industry and don't want to piss off any of my people. I would recommend getting three quotes and having them compete for your business. It's like buying a cell phone. Pay for the equipment up front get cheaper monthly monitoring. Roll the equipment into your bill and of course it's going to be more.

What equipment is with the DIY system ? The DIY model is becoming pretty common now since everything is going wireless. Just keep in mind these things will have issues if a pro installs it or you. Wireless sensors will always have issues. If you don't mind the tinkering than go for it. But its nice for the security guy to come out and swap out faulty equipment when devices go down.

I have the more expensive one. Maybe 25? Allows me to use the app, which is what I wanted.

Wish they'd let me use my existing sensors. House came with a system, just don't want to pay ADT through the nose

All that means is they are paying BBB to keep anything negative off the report.
