How did you like it? Cost of living? How were the international schools for kids? Tips and advice? Were the people friendly?
Thanks
Thanks

I visited for 2 days but couldn't tell you enough about the city one way or the other. I liked what I saw enough to go back, but without speaking mandarin or their local dialect, I'd have zero desire to live there.
Are you teaching English there? Do you speak any languages of Asia?

This is an OMLandshark thread if I've eer seen one.
I believe that's the one that lied in China. Hold out and bump for him.
Maybe he can tell me what to do with my 10 hours in Shanghai in January

Maybe by January I will know enough to give you some advice.

Ah. Good luck .
It's a visually stunning city with great food but unlike some of the other larger Asian cities, finding English speaking folks was damn near impossible at times. I used a translator app for most communication. There was no English/Chinese menus, signs, anything. I imagine it would be a pretty tough adjustment.
If the pay was right, I'd give it some thought, but I really wouldn't want to move my family to anywhere in China with the exception of Hong Kong.

Urban History Museum in the Pearl Tower. It was pretty awesome and took about half a day and then you can hop over and check out the Bund real quick. Just watch out for the scammers. frickers.

I wouldn't spend my day in a museum but that's just me. I would walk around through a couple neighborhoods and eat some good street food

Hong Kong is more English people friendly. But there is a shite ton of Chinese who can speak English

That's all we did. Actually met an English teacher on our connection from chengdu who was just visiting so we hopped around seeing the city with him. He couldn't speak a lick of mandarin or Shanghainese either but had visited several times.
ETA: This fella had been in China for 2 years and still spoke minimal Mandarin. It's an impressively difficult language for native English speakers to learn.

What kind of work does he do if you don't mind me asking? I assume he enjoys it there if he has been there for that long. Is he raising a family there or single?

A friend of mine did...came back a year later...said he couldn't deal with the smog and pollution. He said it is so much worse than what people actually think...

No. This is not what one would like to do in Shanghai. The financial district is new and cutting edge, but there are millions of people everywhere who spit without regard for others and everyone is smoking. The streets smell like noodles and garbage (all fricking day long) and when you get closer to the food carts, you notice that they smell like diarrhea. The older areas of Shanghai are fricking scary and gives you a new appreciation for what poverty can really be like. But perhaps we just like different things, so enjoy your smog, rain, and diarrhea food.

This was the clearest day we had while we were there. The smog is crazy.
And here a beautiful neighborhood to walk through
Oh, and here is a cage of some of that delicious street food...

We actually had pretty clear skies while we were there. We were told that it was due to the wind changing directions. I really enjoyed Shanghai, but like I said, I also had a psuedo guide and didn't experience the heavy smog.
