Hostel use in Australia or the Isle of Wight gets you asleep in the same room as this type of folk:

I stayed in pretty nice one in Barcelona this summer for one night.
It was hilarious and fun and weird all at the same time.
I walked into my room and found these two American college guys smoking weed in my room. I went down to the beach to stare at some Spanish titties. That was nice.
I went out partying with some Australian dudes that night from the hostel and got pretty wrecked. I got lost in the Old Quarter and didn't get home until like 5 AM when my flight out was at like 9 that morning.
Woke up after a few hours of sleep, put my contacts in and rose out of a bunk bed (I was on the bottom). Staring me absolutely right in the face on the top bunk was the buck naked backside of one of the hottest girls I have ever seen naked in my life. She had "B***h" trampstamped on her lower back. She was, I think, Spanish. Just perfect body. I started laughing and awoke an American girl on the other side of the room. She started laughing with me. I either didn't notice her when I stumbled in the night before or she got there even later than I did.
Took a quick cab to the airport and had a long, hunogver flight to Toronto.

Stayed in a few but always got a private room. Think bare bones hotel room

If she was comfortable with it, why not? I assume we would be together all the time. Again, I guess it depends on the hostel, but the ones I've been in, I wouldn't have a problem with it if she didn't.

I stayed at Hans Brinker Haus or some shite when I was in Amsterdam. Lots of bunk beds. Dirt cheap.

Not always the case. Many are hotel style, but don't always have very many amenities (ex. No TV in your room). Sometimes each room on the floor shares a bathroom.
I've staid in different hostel types in both the US and Europe. The only bad experience was my wife getting locked in a stall and the automatic light timer left her in darkness for several minutes.

Stayed in several hostels in Barcelona (2), Istanbul (2), and Reykjavik (1). I had a positive experience at all of these places except one, but that could have been avoided with better research.
If you're traveling alone or in a small group, enjoy meeting new people, and don't mind some lack of privacy, you can find really great hostels. I'll take a good hostel over an expensive hotel just for the social and affordability aspect.

Europeans and Aussies love them. I've never had a problem at a Hostel.
Not all are strictly dorm style, some have choices of sleeping arrangements, some with private amenities.

If your curious to what some hostels look like and their crowd check out some on hostelworld. I did a short eurotrip recently and stayed at hostels for the most part. I had a great time and stayed at some places that were extremely nice for cheap.

Some women can handle it, some can't.
My mother has visited 93 countries, half of them at least twice or more, and she couldn't have visited that many spending $$$ on hotels that she wasn't going to be in anyways.
She still stays in hostels at the age of 63.
