I went through there in 1993 with my dad and my grandpa. I was 15 at the time and my grandma had passed a month prior. Dad decided to take us 3 on a two week trip through the mountains. The Black Canyon of the Gunnison was our most favorite part of the trip still to this day. I watched my grandpa pass away along with my dad in 2002 after he had numerous health issues. He talked about that trip with us up until two days before he passed.

The whole experience was great because it was a big surprise to us. We drove around the rim and stopped at the various lookout points...which was beautiful... and I'm dying to go spend some time hiking or boating down inside the canyon.

It's named that because the canyon walls are so steep not much light enters. At the narrowest part you can see the people on the opposite wall and could even hear each other if you yelled. You look over the edge though and it is 2000 feet down to the river.
On the south rim there are spots with no railing. I have crawled to the edge and looked over. Scared the life out of me.
The top of the canyon is around 10, 000 feet elevation. It is a really unique geographical area.
There is a tunnel that was dug to the river that provides irrigation for the Delta area.
