That is what is infuriating to me is that we were not here 20 minutes and they started talking about putting him down because of his age, if that's common then, ok , I don't want him to suffer , I'll suffer , but if it's common for dogs to live longer and still be happy at the same time then I want to know what the problem is before I even consider putting him down. I want the vet to look at my dog like its his families dog and then tell me what's best. I'm not going to let them put him down. I've made that decision. Worse case I'll tell them to give him something to make him comfortable through the night and then bring him to his normal vet and get a second opinion. Thanks , y'all. Seems pretty irrelevant , I'm sure , but just the few who responded helped if only to give a response. I appreciate that.

I have seen cancer take over a dog completely in a month's time, so unfortunately I'm sure a week is feasible for an older dog. If you're having a hard time with the time frame of the last week and how everything played out, go and get a second opinion. If two vets tell you the same thing, you'll have more confidence in the decision. Sorry you're having to go through this - I know it just plain sucks!

Good decision. Whatever happens, you'll probably feel better about the outcome.

Update the thread when you find out more if you feel up to it.

Sounds like the attending DVM is offering a good option with observing him over night. Rads should tell you if he has ate something that has caused a GI blockage and blood work will help with toxicology. I'd observe over night and wait till morning.

Prayers to you and your wife. Hope you find some comfort in whatever decision you make.
Also hoping for a miracle for all of you

No. He hasn't been any different at all till 6 days ago. At that time he stopped eating his daily meals (he would eat little , randomly) and started to just lay around all the time. That's not him. He wouldn't meet me at the door when I return from work or wherever , he would just lay there. Very lazy or lethargic and not eating too much. Those are the issues until today when he got extra lethargic and seemed to not want to open his eyes all the way.

Good decision, get a 2nd opinion. My dogs are my children, I would do everything I can to help them, and I would absolutely get a 2nd opinion. Best of luck!

I'm not a vet, but maybe it's neurological and not cancer? Seems like cancer would have had symptoms building for a while?

Your situation is tough. Keep your head up

Thanks. They even offered "hospice". For a dog!?!? No! I'll bring him home and bring him to his normal vet in the morning. Make sure he's comfortable for the night. Hospice?? That's got to be a money grab, right?

That's what I'm questioning. And I don't know how it goes with a dog. But it baffles me that there could be NO problems at all and 6 days later it's " he's got cancer , probably best to put him down". That's not a good enough answer for me.

Are you sure he didn't get into anything? Have you changed his diet? No bite marks or anything on him?

Y'all didn't have any Easter Lillys in the house, did you?

Did they offer a shot of Lasix?

I know you're upset, but don't be too critical of the vets. Their goal is to end the animals suffering. If they think he's crashing, they're gonna do what is best for the dog. That said, if they can keep him stable and comfortable overnight, maybe the situation will be clearer in the morning.

Nothing noticeably wrong with him. Face , nose , body , etc. are all normal. No loss of weight that is noticeable , and as I said earlier I can touch/push anywhere on his body and nothing seems to be hurting him. I don't have anything to go on but the fact that he had turned lethargic and isn't eating normally. Also , the eating thing , he's always been a dick when it comes to eating. He just eats when he wants. He stays on his own schedule. He is an inside dog and hasn't shite it anything in the house , no throwing up , etc.

Right! Craziest shite I ever heard. Hospice!?! frick you! That's what I wanted to say to him. 1000.00 for "hospice care". No thank you. Run some blood tests and do an X-ray. Then give him something that will assure he's comfortable over night and I'll bring him home. Currently waiting on results of blood work and X-rays now. Will update when I find out what the results are. I can assure you that "dog hospice" is not an option.

No problem. I have a basset starting to get up there in age. Don't want to imagine.

Hoping for the best for you and your pup.
