without sacrificing his sweet and gentle demeanor around my family and friends?

I had an A/C repair guy come to my house several months back for some basic services. The two gentlemen, who had never been at my house before, arrived before I could get home and let my dog inside. When I get there, one is working on my unit, while the other is playing fetch with my dog. He was even giving commands, including sit and stay. Guy told me my dog would not stop bringing them sticks and trying to lick their faces while they tried to work.
This past weekend, my neighbor's father, who was housesitting for the week, opened my gate and walked into my back yard to repair a warped fence board. Again, he had no prior contact with my dog. Instead of defending my house, he runs through the gate and proceeds to play in the neighborhood pond for the next two hours.

I don't necessarily want him to go after throats, but some barking and posturing sure would be nice.

It's a fine line you are trying to walk with the dog and probably won't get the desired results.

Some dogs can be nice, but realize when someone doesn't belong there. I've had 2 like that

paint your face "to look like a common home invader" and dress in all black. Next, beat the living shite out of it. it will attack anyone matching the description.

You can try to train him to bark when he sees someone. If he barks at all, teach him the "Speak" command. Then progress that to speaking when strangers are present. I wouldn't expect a lot of success.

Your dog's personality is what it is at this point. To try to break him of it would require outright cruelty and there would be no guarantee that that would even work nor would he likely be safe to have around at that point.

He's a German Shepherd. Protection is suppose to be in their blood.

Don't think that's possible. Just get surveillance cameras and enjoy your sweet pooch.

That's a bit of a misnomer. Shepherds are true herding dogs that happen to be very trainable for protection.

It sounds like you have a low-drive dog. It happens. Having said that, if you or the person your dog is bonded to were ever truly in danger I'd be willing to bet he would respond.

Dogs can often sense when something isn't right and will react accordingly. If someone was trying to break into your home they would probably be extremely weary of the dog and the dog will likely sense it.

So what you're saying is that I should stage a fake break-in? I like it.

Generally, being a protective dog is something in the dog's genes. It is much easier to socialize a protective dog than to make a social dog protective.

My Border Collie loves everybody (and is used to help kids who have been bitten by dogs overcome their fear of dogs).

My Aussie Shepherd is extremely protective. She's far more aggressive in being protective than the Belgian Malinois I had. She's fearless (and also bashed out a nice stained glass door trying to get after the Fed Ex guy). But, she is also well socialized (I have her in offices around people and she's fine).

Dogs often respond differently to people of a certain race. You just need to find a friend of that race to see how your dog reacts to him

So you have a sweet, gentle, dog. Worst case scenario, you want to turn him vicious. Best case scenario, you want to turn him into a barking machine the whole neighborhood hates. Awesome

If you need security, get an alarm system, or move to a safer neighborhood. Leave the damn dog alone.

And we kicked their arse in ww2. Do you want a dog that rolls over and surrenders or do you want America's dog, the pit bull?

Only a second dog with a little attitude can teach your present dog to be a guard dog. Think German Shepard or Malinois

This, my Cur/Lab is showing awesome instinct in this regard.

She is super sweet and I even bring her to practice with me, but the other day she was in the back yard when two meter readers try to come back there and she went off on them.

My wife called me freaking out because she couldn't calm her down so that the guys could get back there. I just laughed and said good.
