It's called a book. Get your child to start reading at a young age. You'll thank Scruffy later.

MiL bought all of the grandkids a Kindle Fire for Christmas four years ago. They all still use them.

None. Tablets hurt children's development. Children's minds are naturally wired to get rewards from exploring their world and through real life play. This encourages children to learn and grow. Giving them a tablet rewires their brains to get rewards through apps and games, causing them to neglect real world life lessons at the expense of flashy screens.

There's a reason Steve Jobs prohibited his children from having iPads.

Kindle Fire. It doesn't hinder a child's development. My son is special needs and has improved greatly since starting to use a tablet. They have learning and communication apps. It's not all games and Netflix. iPad is good too but I wouldn't spend that much on a kid.

My son has a Nabi that my mom bought him for his bday. It has a bunch of educational stuff and some games, and you can also download apps on it. They're not very expensive at all, either.

While I don't condone a tablet for a child that young, the Amazon tablets are perfect for this. Got a Amazon 7" tablet for $50 and sideloaded the Google play store so every app is available. Even if it last one year and we have to replace it, so what it was just 50 bucks

Tell that to the preschools that use tablets for entrance testing. If your kid can't manipulate a tablet, they're screwed. I don't like it, but it is what it is.

My kids 4 and 8 have kindle fires. Cheap and you can place timers to limit use. My four year old gets the tablet for 3 hours over the weekend my 8 year old is allowed to make the decision on how to use his five hours over the week. Amazon has some pretty good learning content for the four year old too. My 8 year old uses the video camera to make home movies mostly and records himself playing baseball "like the pros".

Not a fan of these ADHD producing devices during important developmental years but there are real world reasons that demand get kids comfortable with manipulating technology.

Use parental controls to limit daily access windows of time, educational apps and total time allowed.
