Flyboys

Seriously, one of the best books about the Pacific war. goes into the background of the Japanese line of thinking and what pushed them to act in the manner that they did. Explains the importance of the Air Force and the barriers that were faced just to get funding. Also sheds light on the US's transgressions prior to WW2. Amazing book.

Brothers, Rivals, Victors

It's about Eisenhower, Bradley, and Patton. Very, very good book.

not a book but the documentary series WW2 in color on netflix was great. it is entirely composed of remastered film from the war. i'm looking for another similar doc to watch now, but haven't found any that are as thorough.

The Pacific War by Costello
Eagle Against the Sun by Spector
Stillwell and the American Experience in China by Tuchman.

The latter is a great book about an aspect of the war that's not well known. It also sets the stage for the next 70 years of US relations with the Far East. TL;DR, Chiang Kai Shek's Nationalst government was an incompetent kleptocracy. Stillwell, the US commander, had barely disguised contempt for him. But Madame Chiang was elegant and beautiful, and was a rockstar in the US, so we continued backing the Nationalists even though they were a lost cause.

Shaara has a great series in WWII.

It is historical fiction, but only because Shaara fills in the gaps regarding thoughts and conversations. All people and events are based on historical research.

Some good ones already listed... I really liked Flyboys and With the Old Breed.

Right now I'm reading The Return of the Enola Gay written by Paul Tibbets. Lots of good info leading up to, and including, the dropping of the first atomic bomb.

Another good one is My Hitch In Hell by Lester Tinney about his experience on the Bataan Death March. I got to hear him speak at the WWII Museum... what an amazing experience.

And I forgot about Don Malarkey's book Easy Company Soldier: The Legendary Battles of a Sergeant from World War II's "Band of Brothers"... another good read.

From the Final Solution perspective, Kristallnacht, by Martin Gilbert, which is an account of the buildup and execution of the Night of The Broken Glass, when Nazi Germany openly declared war on the Jewish population.

Another interesting story is Treblinka, by Jean Francois Steiner. Treblinka is a lesser known concentration camp where the Jews attempted and partially succeeded in a revolt.

Both are very well written and tell compelling, if horrifying, stories about the methodology and strategy behind the atrocities committed by the Nazis.

Eichmann and Himmler were some evil, evil men.

Inferno: The World at War, 1939-1945 by Max Hastings.

Easily the best single volume WW2 book out there that covers both ETO (Europe) and PTO (Pacific).

Rick Atkinson's 3 volume Liberation Trilogy:
An Army at Dawn
The Day of Battle
The Guns at Last Light

Covers US operations in Europe in detail.

Fire in the Sky, by Eric M Bergerud

Covers the Air War in the South Pacific and goes into great detail about the men and aircraft that fought there.

And what WWII history reading list would be complete without submarines...

Clear the Bridge!: The War Patrols of the U.S.S. Tang
by Richard H. O'Kane

War In The Boats My Wwii Submarine Battles By William J. Ruhe

Those are 2 good books that give a realistic account of life aboard a WWII submarine.
