Yep
Took a very, very nice voluntary severance package at the age of 52 and did not have a job in hand.
Three things played into that.

1. I had faith that God would guide my path forward.
2. I had full support of my spouse that I would find work sooner than later, and I did.
3. I was 100% burned out with my current job/employer.

Leaving after 30 years saved my sanity and ended up being a huge windfall on the $$ side.

Thank you "spouse" and God for supporting my decision.

Okay. You're a little older than I expected you to be (I'm 44 shortly). I'll assume you make considerably more than your wife does, so this is a tough spot.

Listen....I can't tell you what to do and most of the time, I'd say tough it out while on the hunt and just call in anytime you need to do an interview. If there's a potential for you to leave and pick something up part-time to give you more time to look, do that. Only you know your situation. But again, you don't want to be miserable. It will permeate other areas of your life. I really don't think you're going to go unemployed for long if you leave, but you know your worth and your market better than I do.

I did this once and it was right before my wife and I got married. Went on our honeymoon with me having no job, but a good opportunity lined up. It was a shot in the dark. I'm here to say that 22 years later, it worked out and I wouldn't change a thing. If you're religious at all, pray about it. Find peace in whatever decision you make.

I would stick it out until you find a new job
Accounting jobs are in high demand right now
You shouldn’t have any problem finding something with that experience
Get out of the firm life
Your life will be a whole lot better

hell no, find another job first. Your granddad probably worked in a coal mine for 50 years and you're whining about working 50 hours a week in the AC?

I hear you and I know this is counterintuitive, but it really is easier to find a job when you have one. Your approach and the way you evaluate offers will be completely different and your odds of ending up in a better role increase.

It won’t be busy season for long right? If you can mentally commit to a few more months where you are the job search will get easier. And I think that’s the key; committing mentally. If your mindset is “I need to get out of dodge” your going to search, interview and accept offers accordingly.

Also that you don’t have to go around calling people civilians? Lmfao

In my experience it’s this. If you aren’t careful you’ll get filtered out just because you aren’t presently working.

One thing I haven’t seen mentioned but that you could try is checking with staffing agencies in the areas you’d like to work. They often will have recruiters who focus on specialties like accounting and could find you a short-term role that could turn into something bigger or, at worst, serve as a stop-gap.
