I’ve always thought this would be a unique experience. I’m not sure I could ever convince my wife to go. I saw that it’s coming up in April. Does this typically draw large crowds?

no, no one ever has, and those that did would never discuss it on here

I went 12 years ago. Get there early enough to get a decent parking spot.

Make sure to check out the lifers selling their arts & crafts... some good stuff to be found and some absolutely fascinating conversations with the guys willing to talk.

The rodeo itself was pretty fun excluding the baw who got stomped by a bull during the convict poker game.

Discover channel did a documentary in the late nineties that was better than the real thing.

It's a unique experience. Borderline gladiatorial/exploitative. Bulls just plow into prisoners and they drag the guys off by their legs and arms. Rinse and repeat. I was sitting there watching it, wondering "Man, this is kind of fricked up, but also kind of awesome."

Then they brought out monkeys riding border collies and I literally fell out of my seat I was laughing so hard.

Yes, many years ago. Convict poker and trying to get the chip off the bull’s head we’re worth the price of admission.

What ever happened with that “rape” that occurred in the bathroom?

It draws huge crowds.

It's not something I would go to everytime it's held, but it's good to go to once or on rare occasions.

It's interesting just going to Angola and seeing how massive it is.

If you've ever seen professional bull riders, the inmates won't impress you with their bull riding skills (understandably). But everything that involves bravery/craziness of men with nothing to lose as opposed to great talent is good (especially convict poker and "guts and glory").

yes. Prepare for a bit of a wait upon departure. That said, its a fun day. Doubt you'll want to do it again, but its worth the effort.

The real takeaway is how massive the prison is and how hard it would be to escape. Must really suck inside cause convicts still attempt to escape. Coincidentally, there is nowhere to go should you actually get out and the prison chase team is notorious for impressing on the escapee what a bad choice he made.

I had a friend that used to rent them some gear for the rodeo. He always needed help moving stuff around and setting up. He would ask where the Head trustee is, introduce himself, and hand him two cartons of cigarettes. He had all the help he needed, and those baws worked hard.

Was working in an Emergency Room one night in a town hosting a rodeo. Had a guy come in, maybe 120 pounds. Just a regular civilian who signed up to be in the rodeo poker tournament. He had won the game as he was the last to leave the table when the bull charged, BUT the bull had gored him right in the anus. The bull's horn had entered the anus and ripped forward into the scrotum and testicles deep into the lower abdomen. He went to surgery immediately. Heck of a price to pay.

There is a lot of talent in the arts & crafts festival. I enjoyed it.
The rodeo part is decent. No one stayed on a bull for more than 2 seconds though.

Drink the exotic sweet tea. I think it has honey in it. Delicious.

I met Kim Mulkey there. It was her first time going.

That’s Kramer’s mom.
