My 2000 Wrangler 4wd isn't engaging. The shifter feels like there's little to no resistance, but the linkage is moving under the vehicle.

I'm told it's likely not engaging inside the transfer case. Does that sound likely?

Anything else that it could be?

This isn't helpful but:

My goal is to have a jeep. I envision your life as going from one adventure to the next with a good looking cool wife by your side, a dog roaming around. Possibly a car seat strapped in there somewhere.

Had one when I was a kid.

Jeeps are pieces of shite. Engine and drivetrain anyway. I'm sorry the transmission in yours in going awry. Youre still kicking arse in my mind.

Replace engine and tranny with a used chevy set up.

Cheap, common, reliable. More powerful.

Jeep straight 6 engines are known as great engines, but, yes this Jeep has been a pain in the arse.

Is there any other vehicle that I can stick my leg out the door when I'm on the road?

could be a broken gear in the transfer case
you can fix it if you are inclined
if you are disinclined there are pros who can look at it

If it's anything in the transfer case, I'm not fixing it. I don't have the time or tools.

I'll just sell it as a 2wd

You are driving a Jeep from 1999 and it is still worth between $5,000 to $10,000. Replacing might be worth it, because a 2wd Jeep from that era will be worthless.

Replacing is not that hard and you have the time. Go buy tools and be a man.

If it doesn't feel like there is any resistance, and it isn't making a grinding sound at all, I am guessing that it is going to be a very simple problem, like a broken/lost key,or pin, where the linkage actually connects at the transfer case. Still hanging in place, but not able to work the way it is designed.
What happened when it stopped working? Did you have to force it in or out of 4wd? any grinding or clunking sound?
It is definitely worth fixing.
I am no "expert" by any means, but a transfer case isn't super complicated.
Get a good repair manual, and crawl underneath and watch the shifting mechanism closely, while somebody tries to engage it.
You might be able to see the problem and fix it,you may have to take it to a shop, but selling a jeep with a 4wd that just doesn't work, that absolutely always is going to be a losing proposition.

Was going to comment i sold an 03 with 107k miles for 10k about a month ago. If you go to sell your jeep without 4x4 working you will have a hard time selling it and get many offers that are pennies on the dollar. It's worth fixing. Not knowing the specs on your tj, you can very likely find a transfercase for 500 or less that's if it needed complete replacing.

The 4 wheel drive isn't used enough, so half of it (that year model) sit engulfed in fluid, the other half dry, so it rust. When you engage it after long periods of not using it, the rust breaks free and does all kinds of damage. If you have a Jeep Wrangler use the 4 wheel drive option at least once a week year round to keep the disc (or whatever it is) coated in fluid. I loved mine, bought it brand new and tricked out while in the USAF. I will never buy another Wrangler again.

look at your transfer case. the linkage is connected(should be be) to a lever on the case. is that moving when shifting?

I'm not sure what happened, as there was never a reason to use it down here in South Georgia.

I was about to sell it and the guy pointed it out to me so I had my neighbor look at it and he said that it looked like all of the linkage was connected so it was likely a transfer case problem.
