Does Bill Gates endorse getting an Online Degree?

Wildlife Biologist here. As someone else said, it's all about internships and experience. If you go the ecologist/wildlife degree route get a Masters degree. Without it you are just another of thousands of wildlife biologist looking for a job. My undergrtad grades were not that good but I had a 3.5 after grad shcool. I started my career with the AR Game and Fish Commission in 2003 at $32,000. I then got on with the NRCS (branch of USDA that administers the Farm Bill Programs) and have made good money since. I worked at the State level for about 7 years (AR and LA) then got on with NRCS National Headquarters. I am now a national program manager and make just under $100,000. My career path is not typical AT ALL. I busted my arse.

I am a sophomore in Agribusiness right now. I’m supposed to be a senior. I really don’t like it and my GPA is terrible.
Why do people like you even stay in college?
Follow the advice of the thread and pick up a trade. You'll stop bleeding money to LSU and make more money doing that than whatever first job you get with a 2.0 in Ecology.

isn't ecology like urban planning or something? Don't you like have to work for the government and all that?

Yea you definitely aren't the typical case
I know plenty of guys in DEQ/NRCS who live very nice, modest lives but they'll never be rich. But if you love the work that definitely counts for ablot

You are right JB. I've been very lucky. The folks in charge know if you really love what you do, such as being a willdife biologist, that they dont have to pay you chit to do it!

You could likely get hired on with an environmental consulting firm. There are professional certs you can work towards such as wetlands scientist.
I would highly recommend learning soils and wetland plant taxonomy. There is a lot of environmental work for O/G companies that use those skills.
I would also recommend picking up a GIS class.

When I went to talk to the counselor , she gave me visions of going to Africa or South America and studying elephants or doing the shite you see on animal planet or national geographic . I wish colleges would tell the truth to students about certain fields

and you want to be paid?
Then you better have a Doctorate, or two, maybe a masters in a programming, stats, or math modeling field.
ETA: Most people are volunteers or paid next to nothing. The scientists running it get paid.

if you go Ecology route, you need to at least get a Graduate degree, and doctorate if you want to go study in Africa
you might be able to get on with a consulting firm, but you won't be doing any type of "ecology", you'll just be doing O&G consulting, permitting, etc

Film? Feeding lions in Africa? Ecology?
Man, what kind of career advice have you been getting? Even the OT gives out better advice that this, and it's the worst advice possible.
Can you salvage what you have into any type of recognizable degree? Like economics, business, liberal arts, something?

Man I had to tell this to one of the students I taught last year about science.
He made a comment about wanting to do the exciting stuff, work on the submarines, satellite stuff, North pole, dry suit diving, etc, etc...
Said he wouldnt really need the analyses stuff because that was the kind of scientist he was going to be.
I laughed, then told him...ALL of the scientists want to play with the toys, the robots, the subs, etc. You have to do the hard stuff too. Thats who you would be competing with, it's not like you would be doing something nobody wants to do. people work really hard to do that stuff, and most of the super exciting projects have most of their help from volunteers.
