damn. this is bad. prayers sent for him and the family. accidents happen in any walk of life and that just sucks. seems like the guy was in great shape and competing in something and just got a very unfortunate break. I am not a fan of cross fit but I don't see how that was a factor in this one.

Saw this on the Starting Strength board. Sad. Why did they have stacks of weights on the platform so close to the lifter?

Torn muscle in my back which also damaged a nerve, and that was after losing 60 lbs and doing it about 9 months.

That sucks.
You can't blame CF for this though. This was an accident. If you look hard enough you can find injuries in any type of workout program.
I agree. You can get the same gains with less risk by doing other exercises.

Unless you're special forces or a competitive athlete I just don't see how short term benefits outweigh the long term wear and tear... Plenty of other ways to get very strong/fit with significantly less risk of long term issues than doing snatch/cleans, etc.

Sorry for crossfitting, bro

pretty sad deal for the dude
With little information by snatch I assume they are referring to power cleans.
That's not a crossfit specific workout and has been around for a lot longer than crossfit.

Lol first rule of the OT...Any negative event that happens to a crossfitter is the sole responsibility of doing CrossFit and would not ever happen in any other exercise regimen

I almost posted this 2 days ago but didn't want to start a crossfit bitch fest. I really think this was a freak accident but anyone competing in something like this should have health insurance to compete

Believe it or not, freaking push ups on chest/back day. Just goes to show that freak things happen. I was out for 8 weeks.

Damn... it wasn't those stupid diverbomber pushups by chance was it?

i am right now while i help a buddy get his box going but most of the time no, i just do compound lifts at home with things like tire flips, snad bad carries, running etc for conditioning.
why cf is being blamed for this i will never understand. and snatches and cleans are not hard on your body, no more sore then half the other lifts.

I can't speak for the people here, but on on actual lifing boards, the sticking point is that the platform was not clear of other material during a competition. Look at actual o-lifing meets. There is nothing on plaform except for the athlete and the barbell.
The problem I have is that this kind of stuff is rampant in crossfit gyms. The weekend cert is not enough experience for trainers/box owners to avoid something that a seasoned coach would recognize right away. So you have people o-lifting with a stack of plates behind them. You have people suffering from Rhabdo because the coach didn't adjust the WOD for the trainee's level of fitness.
Then you get this nonsense:

The guy in front on the left is Jason Khalipa. He won the crossfits games at least once. Who though it would be a good idea to strap a bunch of girls to a car with crossfits version of He-Man leading the pack? And before someone says "you can't judge all of crossfit by the actions of a few," the video above was at a crossfit headquarters sponsered event.
I used to crossfit for about two years. It was fun. But it is not the end all be all of training, no matter how broad your times and modal domains are.

Which is plain bad coaching and bad coaching is rampant in cf. Thats why you must be careful which you pick. Just as you would if choosing and personal trainer.

Pretty damn stupid, right? And its sad. When xfit first started, it was about functionality, and it worked. I believe that they got so wrapped up in their uniqueness that when other programs started following suit, xfit hadto get more outlandish to set themselves apart. So you get goofy shite like people running, strapped to a police car, all in the name of elite fitness.
