What harm would have come if the police did not pursue him? Do you think he would have thrown rocks at police officers again after getting shot at for it? Would you have let him just go after he started fleeing in fear of his life?

Same thing in that Montana (I think) shooting.

Guy was clearly high and fidgeting around. Instead of the cop retreating to his vehicle (potentially letting them escape in the process), he stands there and yells before shooting him up.

I understand that while pursuing a known danger to the community, but there is a move toward police having no obligation (ethically, not legally) to retreat or give up chase, or sustain risk sustaining even slight injury.

That's just really dangerous, IMO.

That's the case with everyone in America. He hadn't pulled it or attempted to pull it if he had one. Based on this line of reasoning, everyone in America is a threat to police everywhere and any resistance should be met with lethal force.

And that's fricking bananas.

In the 22-second video, the man moves across the street from the pursuing policemen. He turns to face them briefly, lifting his right arm as if to throw another object, when they open fire, according to the video.

Oh give me a fricking break Yahoo. Was this article written by the police chief?

Unless he was about to throw a genade, I'm failing to see where shooting him was the best or only option.

Fastest...sure. Best? No.

Breaking the law should not automatically result in a death sentence. How many kids on playgrounds would be executed if the law gunned them down every time they threw a rock at someone?

absolutely not, but breaking the law puts you in that position.

They initially started to fire AFTER the rock was thrown. I'd have been okay if they had shot him while he was still threatening to bash in the cop's skull with the rock. But you start shooting after he throws it and turns to run away?!? Wtf

This looks to be another solid example of how if the guys having rocks thrown at them were not police officers all holding weapons and the authority to use them when "threatened" a man would still be alive. Any other situation where three or four men were having rocks thrown at them by one guy would have subdued him easily without killing him AND endangering the lives of bystanders by spraying bullets around.

Exactly. In most states' laws, the response to an assault must be proportionate. I fail to see how firing a hail of bullets is proportionate to a guy throwing rocks at you.

Particularly when it looks like the guy has never thrown anything in his life. Sheesh. Terrible form. Never played baseball, that's for sure.

well a big enough rock striking someone's head could be lethal... people need to start respeking the law.

So if someone threw a rock at you and you shot him dead, Would you be convicted of murder?

officer safety > subduing a suspect safely.

not to mention innocent bystanders who could have been hit by these idiots firing and missing at close range.

My goodness. I love all the jimmie rustling that cop threads bring. One of this sites most redeeming qualities.

We don't have to act like being anti-cop overreach and anti-crime are mutually exclusive. I doubt many people would object to this guy getting a arse beating by cops in subduing him for his conduct.

It's clear that the culture is fricked up. I think most of us, even those of us willing to use weapons to defend ourselves or our family or property, wouldn't go "oh shite, a rock, time to die fricker." That's a learned response.
