Family identified the man who was killed Thursday night while leaving a corner store on East Polk Street and Thomas H Delpit as 37-year-old Donald Wayne "DW" Ely.

Ely had left Thomas Grocery and was walking to his white pickup truck around 8:30 p.m. when his cousin, Keisha Jackson, heard gunshots. She said she though the first shot was a balloon popping, but soon realized it was gunfire and that her cousin was on the ground shot so she quickly called police.

Jackson and Ely's older sister, Yashica Singleton, said they were told that another man was in the hospital after he was shot in the leg during the incident, but they did not know what happened.

Jackson and Singleton said Ely was the father of a young teenage boy who was on the honor roll at McKinley High School. They said they both admired Ely for the way he raised his son and kept him on a good path. Jackson added that Ely didn't bother anyone and was a good person.
