At 750 employees making an average of $100k, thats only $75 million. That is at a big university which would most definitely take in more than $500 million a year. Where does the rest go?

just because this guy seems to be unemployable doesn't mean he is wrong about the way universities are gaming the system.

That's because I got a real degree in Advanced Physiological Space Science Engineering instead of some bullshite degree like Writing or Spelling.

Oh, I agree, but that is not the source of his problem. His problem is he's an entitled dick with a likely worthless major who likely comes off as such in an interview. You don't go 2 years without a job unless you yourself have major issues.

Maybe you should start looking more inward at the problem (which is you) instead of blaming everyone else for your problems.

This guy is without question some combination of:

-being socially awkward to the point where no one will give him an opportunity after interviewing him

-unwilling to move to take a job

-overvalues himself to the point where he won't take a job less than what he thinks he deserves to build a resume and into the workforce

-didn't bother to acquire any meaningful experience while going through school

-lacks introspection and believes he is entitled to every job he applies for, causing him to continuously aim too high

I'd say average at LSU is like $150k. Tack on benefit packages on top of salaries you double your number. Then tack on coaches/athletics staff $25M(most schools don't operate like LSU/TAF). Capital improvement projects one a year at $10-20M. New state of the art Dell desktops $500/pop. The board of directors' private jet usage, $10M. Lining the pockets of top administration, governors, senators, etc. $20-30M

I am in no way justifying any of this expense

If assholes like him would stop paying for worthless degrees, the Universities would stop offering them.

I'm not saying Universities are anywhere near innocent but they're no different than any big business and supply and demand is a very effective tool to calm the "man" the frick down when they get out of hand greedy.

The guy needs to humble himself and head to North Dakota or Midland, TX to work the oil fields. Gut it out for 3 or 4 years to pay off the debt and then focus on a career. I doubt this self-righteous jerk would ever take that step.

He should be able to get something even if that something kind of sucks and isn't what he ideally wants to do. Has to be entitlement. He probably thinks he's too good to work a job like that.

Nope, he'll become a professor. These types have always existed, they become professors.

I was in an LSU Graduate Program that is essentially a PhD feeder program. About 95% of the people in my class go on to the PhD because they have no people skills and teaching will be the only thing they can do.

That 95% also chooses to work for the Program as TAs instead of seeking out Graduate Assistantships with other LSU entities. Those of us who were GAs for other parts of the college actually got really good jobs after we graduated. While those who sucked at the Graduate Faculty's teat and thumbed their nose down at us are either teaching middle school or putting themselves in further debt to get a PhD.
I'm not mad. Just happy that I was able to enjoy myself at LSU and not be that student who looks down on those who enjoy a social life.

He's got a point about rising tuition and federal loans though.

it isn't his entire problem, but if the costs of education were more appropriately aligned then people could have had the same options as the did in the past.

In other words, as a young students for the most part you listen to your parents and advisers who went through school at a time when you actually could just go and get a degree for the most part and find a good job, often not even in your direct field, with just the paper that says graduate.

However today, due to the costs of education to the student which are rising at a level not commensurate with the costs of the universities to provide said education, you need a high paying job pay it off, and due to the competition you now need to be more specialized so the advice many receive from advisers and parents is no longer applicable. I am sure most are starting to advise different (at least I hope so) but there is a small generation that missed the gap which when coupled with the recession and resultant older people occupying entry level positions makes it very difficult for some to get out from under the high costs of the student loans.

is it the students fault? yes in the end it is all on the student. However the problem is also due in part to the actions of university's (generally speaking) and lenders

Average tenured teacher, or major research teacher might make that much, but as a whole, the teachers cannot make an average of $150k/yr. Just too hard for me to believe. Say they buy 500 computers at $500, that's still only $250,000/yr. Building two new buildings probably costs(just guessing) $50MM/yr.

In no way does it add up to them losing money, and frankly, it seems to me like they would be at least clearing a couple of hundred million a year.

Not when you take into account the briefcases of cash delivered around the state during Christmas times each year. Those are "expenses" too

FWIW, I wholly agree with you, I am sarcastically justifying these "expenses"
