Goes to show how high the deck is above the waterline. Those carriers are huge.

Naval aviators are the best in the business, but they only fly the very end of the approach, the rest is on autopilot.

It was a little before your time, but my cousin was a Lt. Comm on the Theodore Roosevelt in the 80's and I was fortunate enough to go on the Tiger Cruise in 1987 which departed out of Ft Lauderdale and sailed to Norfolk over 3 nights and 4 days....was able to see up close and personal take offs/ landings - great stuff.

That is pretty cool. None of my family were ever able to make it up to do one. Did they break the sound barrier on a fly by? I always thought that was pretty awesome.

My grandpa worked on the engines Doolittle used for his raid. We have been searching for the letter Doolittle wrote to my gramps for the Ww2 Museum but I think it maybe lost to the Sands of time.

This reminds me of the film and books of the Doolittle raid...

Was he on the Hornet? My grandfather had some interesting stories from when Doolittle and his planes were on deck.

Yes. They conducted 2 air shows - one firing rounds and dropping bombs and the other without. There were several sound barrier breaking fly by's.

Certainly was neat for me as a 14 year old. Wish I had a video of the trip, though.
