People see old footage of WWII carriers or Top Gun, and such and fail to realize that, unlike a standard landing on a 8k to 12k foot runway (looking real hard at you USAF pussy "pilots"), USN and USMC "aviators" have to literally crash on aircraft carriers in a controlled enough fashion to preserve the aircraft, ordnance and prevent injuries.
So, there's that.
So, there's that.

Well, Navy pilots are better than AF anyway - how many AF can land on a pitching deck?

Im wondering if they threw away their old flight suits or were able to get the stains out.

Serious question- what happens when a naval aviator puts one in the drink?
I can't imagine they have many extra aircraft just lying around.

The USN doesn't have pilots, baw. They're naval aviators (gold wings, FTMFW).

Well, except for astronaut "pilots."

As Tony Montana refers to that aircraft.

pretty crazy
I was in a COD (prop plane) landing on our carrier and we missed the wires, pretty creepy watching the tower go by and you arent slowing down, then you drop off the edge... was sure we were about the get wet!

From the Comments:

Every time I see one of these, I think of my brother. He was a Marine pilot flying the Prowlers. His arrestor hook broke off, sending his plane crashing into 4 Hornets on the flight deck. Including his plane, 5 aircraft were destroyed. He and his copilot ejected but my brother broke his leg when he hit the flight deck. After that day, his new call sign was "Ace".
quote:
His callsign through flight school was "Skate" as his instructors said that was exactly what he did to make it through.

I have a friend who flies EF-18's. He explained the physics involved with "calling the ball".
When you are about 100 yards away from the deck, changes in the ball mean a correction in increments of 6-12 inches.
Imagine that...Flying over 100MPH with that level of precision. That's an incredible amount of concentration
My dad helped build the E-2C!.... Geaux Grumman!

probably as many as receive training to do it, and there are exchange programs where AF pilots get carrier qualled

Video of the incident released by the Navy on Friday shows a harrowing few moments in which the aircraft disappears off the flight deck and reappears several seconds later. Crew members aboard the flight deck can be seen running. Two sections of the broken No. 4 pendant and purchase cable "recoiled sharply and backlashed," the report says.
Eight sailors suffered a variety of injuries, including a fractured ankle, wrist, pelvis and legs. One sailor received skull and facial fractures while another suffered a possible traumatic brain injury.
