It is best to get as many males in your family as possible. Yourself, your dad if living, your GF if living and brothers and uncles. You will find that all of your DNA is not the same. You might show 2% sub Saharan where your brother does not. Doesn't mean you don't share the exact same lineage 20 generations back. Just means that DNA traits from way way way way back were passed to you via the female chromosome. Could be from 3000 or more years ago.

WTF?

ETA: Upon further analysis I'm guessing that is grandfather and not girlfriend.

So what makes one company better than the other (Ancestry DNA vs 23andnme or whoever else does this)?

I did it last year. Pretty interesting I guess, but its just so hard to know if its accurate. Its not too dissimilar from palm reading. If they're vague enough, you can spin it into being true.

I have been told that I have Native American ancestry, but that's pretty hard to verify on paper. Sure enough, the results show 6% Native American, but that would include everywhere from the North Pole to South America.

66% of my DNA (again, allegedly) is from "Europe West", with a separate 14% being from Ireland, and traces from Iberian Peninsula (4%), Scandinavia (2%), and less than 1% from Italy/Greece, Finland/Russia, and Europe East.

There are different explanations in the results that kinda make it make more sense. For example, I knew I had English ancestry, but apparently the clans or tribes or whathaveyou that populated the British Isles lived at one point in present day Germany, France, Poland, etc. So, that would explain the "Europe West" as the gene pool would predate the geo-political boundaries.

So, if its not bullshite, its a good basis for where your ancestry comes from on the globe, but it won't tell you that your family comes from Madrid, Spain.

Ancestry DNA will not tell you your DNA is "French". As far as they are concerned that is considered "Europe West"

I did mine and it said I was something like 40% Great Britain, 25% Irish, 20% Europe West, 10% Finnish/Russian

23andMe just upped their price from $99 to $199 LINK

Was thinking about getting it but double the old price seems steep

That's more than double. I've identified your weak math DNA. That'll be $50. I accept PayPal.

I like Family Tree DNA (FTDNA) for YDNA testing which traces male linage because of their databases and their surname and haplogroup projects. They are all about the same for autosomal tests which trace both male and female lines. I am working a tree at Ancestry.com and you can connect your test with your tree and they will search out your matches within other trees depending on your settings. All will have sales around the holidays and you probably can buy autosomal tests for $79-$99.
