Anyone ever taken a long trip on one?
Was wondering if going from Hammond to Chicago was worth doing and for how much?

It cost more than flying and takes five times as long.
My grandparents loved it though, I can;t see myself taking it, but they talked about that train all the time, even after the Alzheimer's took over.

I went from Birmingham to Seattle via DC and Chicago. I didn't have a sleeper until Chicago and if you plan on anything over a day a sleeper is a must.

I've considered it, but it costs more than flying. Like usually a lot more. No way I'm paying more than flying and it take 2 days.

Why aren't trains here more affordable like in Europe?

La to Chicago is about $ 225 round trip...leaves in the afternoon from downtown N.O./hammond and gets to Chicago/downtown early am. Comfortable seating...bring your own "beverages" and it's a good trip !

I've taken Amtrak Chicago-New Orleans and it's awesome.. of course, as mentioned, it is more expensive but if you have the time it is a great way to see the country from a new perspective.

Ive gone from Hammond to Chicago multiple times. Depending when you get the tickets, could be cost efficient. 12 hour or more ride but comfortable seats, you can bring whatever, bar and restaurants on train.

When I was kid we took a trip from Jackson Ms to Chicago. It was an overnight trip and I loved it because I was really into trains as a kid.

google should be able help with the pric. If you like trains then it could be worth the trip if you are just trying to get to Chicago, take a plane.

It's a great (however long) way to get to NYC from New Orleans. The airports are far away from the city. The train drops you off at Penn Station right under Madison Square Garden. I've never done that on the route from New Orleans, though.

I've taken Amtrak from Philly to NYC. Then NYC to Boston and back.

They have one out of Orlando that goes to DC. You can bring your car along with you. Seriously considering it.

if your goal is simply to get from la to chicago, then no...much better to fly...

if you would enjoy the experience of riding a train, then absolutely do it...

I did it NOLA to NYC and back once. We had sleeper cars. I think it took about a day and a half. It was more expensive than first class flights and it wasn't luxurious by any means. The sleeper cars are very dated. The food is terrible. But I'm glad I did it. It was an interesting experience in a good way. The scenery is amazing. But if I did it again I'd bring my own food and a lot more of my own booze. It's a pretty cool way to see the country.
