The traffic alone was enough for me to move away from Austin.

What freaking city, that is the size of Austin, has only one interstate in city limits? Public transportation in that city is a joke. I just see one huge traffic jam when I think of Austin now.

It's also not as cool as everyone in this thread seems to think it is. This city is turning into a mini-California with the quickness

Your opinion of California seems to be an issue for you and isn't or shouldn't be a factor on our opinion of Austin . If you don't like Austin, don't sacrifice your happiness and morals by staying. It's a big country with many areas which likely suit your lifestyle... Topeka for example.

Austin is going through what Atlanta went through in the early to mid 90's, to a lesser extent of course. Metro Atlanta was well over 2 million people in early 90's, but now it's over 5.5.

And we still haven't recovered infrastructure wise.

I've lived here since February. This Summer didn't feel as hot as Baton Rouge, way less humid.

I love living here. The strangest thing is how nice the service workers are at the grocery store and such. I thought people we're being sarcastically nice to me when I first moved here when they asked how my day was, I'm used to Baton Rouge cashiers ignoring me completely.

i think this is the biggest thing my dad noticed while here in Austin the last 2 weeks. He was best buds with every service person we encountered. the guy who turned on my gas stayed for beers and ate boiled crabs with us.

The california thing is real but a complete exaggeration in terms of effect. I've met one californian here in 12 months. I'm not in tech though.

The central real estate is a beast for sure

Nashville is one of the safer big cities in the south but it still has some legit hoods. Either way, it's a great town.

That's insane. That must be completely isolated to parts of the city no one goes to because I have friends living all over the place and this city makes Baton Rouge and New Orleans feel like Syria.

I leave my doors to house and car unlocked all the time. I've never known anyone that has been a victim of or been witness to any violent crime or even petty crime like theft.

Meanwhile, basically everyone I know in BR, NO, and Memphis have experienced something like that.

just stop now.

i don't even lock my doors and in the 21 years i've lived here i've had exactly ONE leaf blower stolen from my garage (which i left open all night).

i've lived in multiple apartments & now on my third home and have moved all over the place.

you sir, have no idea what you're talking about.

i have ridden my bicycle through some of the 'worst' parts of time at all hours of the day and night and had zero problems.

i've also been known to hang out at all hours of the night in east nashville which is about as big of a cross-over area there is.

nashville ONLY gets better.

if you knew a damn thing about this town, you'd realize even moderately bad areas such as woodbine are improving dramatically with houses going for 3x what people paid for them just a few short years ago.

come at me bro, i live and breathe this city and i can tell you its NOTHING like BR or NOLA or HOUSTON or ATLANTA...its a damn paradise.

Nashville isn't completely immune to crime.

Definitely North Nashville, parts of East Nashville (Dickerson Pike area, Cayce), parts of The Nations (pushing towards TSU), Antioch, and Smyrna see their fair share.

Traffic there is insane and real estate prices are similarly insane yet the wages are not high. When that bubble pops a lot of people are upside down.

My new hood

They're turning 51st into a 12th South type area. Shrinking it down to 2 lanes with a bike path, getting a Taproom, Corner Pub, a few restaurants, and several retail developments.

And I'm 2 blocks away. I'm pumped.

Nashville is relatively safe - every larger city has hoods. Here are the 2013 murder stats (sort most to least safe) for select cities:
State City Population Murder Rate (Per Capita 1/100,000)
1 Arizona Chandler 252,369 0.4
13 Texas Austin 903,924 3.5
36 Tennessee Nashville 647,689 6.3
39 Texas San Antonio 1,428,465 7.2
53 Texas Dallas 1,272,396 9.1
57 Texas Houston 2,219,933 10.9
72 Georgia Atlanta 454,363 20.5
78 Louisiana New Orleans 387,113 38.7
79 Michigan Detroit 684,694 43.5
80 Missouri St. Louis 318,574 49.9

The Nations will turn out just like Sylvan Park, East, Germantown, etc...the crime is all pushed and priced out to North Nashville.

Turtle Anarchy moved their brewery operation there. Fat Bottom (meh) is supposedly relocating their taproom there. Word is, the chef of Chauhan Ale & Masala House and backer of Mantra Brewery is looking to put a gastropub in the East Nashville location.

It's a damn shame the The Stone Fox shutdown. That was a very underrated spot in the Nations. I need to check out the House or whatever bar/restaurant moved into their spot.

It's amazing what low taxes, good schools, and investment in infrastructure can do for a state. Buy you just keep doing you, Louisiana.

You won't like it.

Stone Fox shut down because the owners had other jobs that were becoming too successful. Which is kind of a cool reason to shut down I guess.
