Unless you fly more than a few times a year, traveling an hour + to an airport is inconsequential.
But, I do prefer flying out of smaller airports, if the same number of stops to my destination are required.

It is because of staff shortages. If pilots don't fly for X days, they have to get re-certified or something to that effect. Covid canceled many flights and many pilots sat idle. Now that demand is back, many pilots have said "F it" and the airlines are left short staffed.

To be fair a lot of these small cities are only serviced because of government subsidies.

If the market cant support it they shouldnt fly there

And both Toledo and Islip are an hour away from a major international airport

that's why i said "one of many". it's a part of the larger trend of everything consolidating into a few major metros and the rest of the country being left in the dust.

If your home base is Florence SC I doubt you would have a job that requires flying weekly. I drive from Columbia to Charlotte anytime I'm flying because the Columbia airport has some jacked up prices.

Yeah, thinking back to SC, I think of Florence. Town of like 35,000 about halfway between Columbia and Myrtle Beach. It has a couple daily AA flights into Charlotte. That air availability would be very important to me if I lived there.

Myrtle Beach and Columbia are 1.5 hours or less to Florence. MYR is looking to expand again after recently doubling in size. Would not be surprised to see AA eventually cut Florence out because of this.

i doubt locality to a major airport is high on the priority list for the majority of the “move somewhere less expensive” crowd.

IDK. I guess it depends on if those people are taking their careers with them and are required to travel at least 50% of the time for business.

I'm moving to south Louisiana from Chicago, and the proximity to MSY (and BTR as a nearby backup) were major factors in my decision to move to south Louisiana. My job would be nearly impossible in a more isolated mid sized MSA with slower air service - like Monroe, Augusta, Corpus Christi, Alexandria (La), Huntsville, El Paso, or Shreveport.

this is one of many reasons the "move somewhere less expensive" argument holds less and less water

For most people that only fly a handful of times per year, this is irrelevant. Toledo is less than an hour from Detroit's main airport. Islip is less than an hour from JFK and LaGuardia, and Ithaca is just over an hour to Syracuse.

If someone is flying multiple times per month for work this might matter, but generally no.

I feel like I heard about an airline CEO setting up either this weekly flight exactly or one similar to it so he could visit his horses on the weekends.

don't know about now, although I have a good idea, but all of those cities used to be served by large jet service and multiple airlines, giving a pretty good choice of service

I know Shreveport still has mainline service on some airlines. But I don't know if that continues if airlines are bent on cutting service.

This is a very, very small population.

I think Shreveport is all regional(feeder) service and has been for decades?, I flew the last scheduled 727 for our company in and out of Shreveport back in the early 90s

I thought they had Delta mainline to ATL?

I know BTR does. I think it's either a 717 or A319, and DAL is trying to scale up again after the pandemic.

I don't know about BTR American service, but it wouldn't surprise me if they had the bulk of the market share there. I think it's usually a regional carrier out of BTR on one of the bigger ERJ jets though.

I don't pay attention to United.

ETA: 727 out of Shreveport? You are older than I thought you were.

Delta used to fly DC-8s in and out of SHV, and yes, I'm old, alas but in six more weeks this saga comes to an end

“regional pilot shortage.”

So from my understanding this is a self-inflicted wound by the FAA

They changed the minimum number of flight hours for pilots who wanted to fly for airlines to 1500hrs. It takes a very long time and is super expensive to work your way to that total time.

That policy change did not account for the high number of boomer pilots retiring. meaning the FAA made it harder to backfill vacancies right at the peak of the boomer mandatory age of retirement (65)

Beginner commercial pilots do not earn a great wage, regional pilots used to not get paid well but the shortage has helped boost their salaries. Most new pilots are racked with debt from all of the trainings and flight hours they have to pay for.
