They claim it's for a staff shortage - but they seem to be extremely timid about scaling up right now in what many think is a recession.

A few more declining midwestern cities are losing service, further isolating them from the 21st century economy. I'd be concerned about smaller cities in the south - like Alexandria, LA - losing service if this continues.

quote:

American Airlines has announced it will end services to three U.S. cities in the fall citing a “regional pilot shortage.”

The three cities that will no longer be serviced by the airline are Toledo, Ohio; Ithaca, New York; and Islip, New York, according to an airline spokesperson.

quote:

Three regional carriers wholly owned by American — PSA Airlines, Envoy Air and Piedmont Airlines — recently announced contract agreements with American that include “significant pay increases” as part of efforts to attract and retain pilots, according to the Air Line Pilots Association (ALPA), a pilot union that represents the employees.

this is one of many reasons the "move somewhere less expensive" argument holds less and less water

Sounds like there just isn’t the necessary traffic in the rust belt

Yeah, thinking back to SC, I think of Florence. Town of like 35,000 about halfway between Columbia and Myrtle Beach. It has a couple daily AA flights into Charlotte. That air availability would be very important to me if I lived there.

It's little over an hour drive to Columbia from Florence. Ithaca is only an hour drive from Syracuse. Most people only fly a couple times a year if that. So moving to somewhere less expensive can easily make sense to them if they only have to make an hour drive a couple times a year to catch a flight.

Wife and I never fly out of Columbia. We always drive to Charlotte. Cheaper flights, and cheaper parking.

Because God forbid you would have to make that 2 hour, or less, drive

Yeah. Even then, you have to be in a metro of at least 500k people for decent air service.

And economically viable metro areas of 500K or more are still seeing big increases in costs of living.

Yeah where I live has a little regional airport that has advantages for some flights, but I'm also 3 hours from Houston or Nola, so the key is to live in smaller areas that have options. You don't have to get away from bigger cities and live 6+ hours from big city options.

Listen, bubba, there is nothing more +EV than relying on small airport security to start a big flight journey.

I don't think it's ever taken me more than 5 minutes to go through security in my local airport. And there's free parking, too.

Where are the staffing issues? Locally or pilots and stewardess’? I’m curious? Our local airport was only paying like $14/ hour and only part time on purpose to avoid benefits for the desk agents. They were looking for a particular employee that just wanted the free flight benefit. So I’m curious if this is still the business model for their commuter airports?

The last thing I want to do is have a 2 hour drive tacked on to a multi-hour flight, but maybe that is just me

This means very little for the overwhelming majority of the population.

That's a shame. It'll be harder for me to fly to places I wouldn't want to go anyway.

For the masses of tech employees trying to escape California's insane costs of living....air service does matter.

They are definitely spilling into mid sized metros and driving up housing prices. Before they were primarily going to the major Texas or midwestern cities. But now it's metro areas like Indy, Pittsburgh, Nashville, etc.

i doubt locality to a major airport is high on the priority list for the majority of the “move somewhere less expensive” crowd.

Putting my tin foil hat on...

I think they aren't that serious about adding more employees and improving their service. I suspect the airlines are aware of forecasts that business travel will dip again soon.
