"America should have been art deco"

It's a pretty uniquely American style, and absolutely gorgeous. Strangely, some of the best art deco building are found in Ohio (mostly Cincy, but Cleveland has some good ones).
I get that cost is a big factor in architectural decisions, but it's sad that we don't produce beautiful buildings anymore. A lot of these buildings were built in the 20's and 30's, when people were much poorer than they are today. Architecture should return to the days where it inspired awe and lifted our spirits instead of making us miserable.

I'm a bit of an architectural retard. I've seen somewhat similar French buildings, but the American buildings have an almost Egyptian/Greek flair to them.

Michael Diamant writes about this frequently. It wouldn’t be more expensive to make it beautiful.

Being a woodworker who likes and restores old iron Delta had some interesting art deco styling for quite a few years. I love the stuff but it is all relatively small equipment so I don't have any except a 28-350 20" bandsaw with some leftover art deco lines. Almost all WWing machines built now are purely industrial designs. A couple of pictures of the small 6 and 8" jointer bases which are some the best example:

That McDonald's seems to me to have a pretty strong Art Deco influence. It's been bastardized and commoditized, but it's there.
I don't mind Brutalism if it's not too experimental. The "Executive Park" area of DeKalb County, GA was a tasteful example. Most of those buildings have been torn down in the last 10 years. I miss them.

American architects seemed to have given up. There’s some amazing stuff being built in Singapore and Taipei for example.
