NASA recently released a 1.5 billion pixel image of the Andromeda galaxy, our nearest galactic neighbor, which contains over 100 million stars and spans more than 40,000 light years – and that’s just a section of the galaxy.

video-gigapixels of Andromeda

Truly amazing
I love this kind of stuff.

I just realized it is germans, but I'll keep it up for those who are interested. Sorry.

Space is a heavy thought

Each of those tiny dots are stars probably much bigger than our sun and have their own solar systems

Hard to wrap your head around

I'd love to go where ever that picture is taken and stare at the night sky. Space is awesome. I just want to know who else is out there.

I don't pretend to be an expert, but it's crazy how most people have no clue about the scale of the universe.

I understand what the general was saying.

The earth is fricking huge to a human and few realize how truly big it is. Now take into account how small earth is in the universe. :mindblown:

Our galaxy contains over a 100 billion planets.

Our galaxy will collide with the Andromeda galaxy in about 4 billion years.

To me, this isn't the most interesting part.

The most interesting part is that even those that have a clue, really don't.

I mean, the smartest man on the planet will still tell you that if you say something is 10 billion light years away that to the human mind, that's about as meaningful as saying "it's fricking absurdly far away".

Our minds can't even being to conceive of such distances. Hell, if I didn't allow you to count your steps or time yourself and told you to just walk a straight line for 1 mile and then stop, you would be damned lucky if you came within .2 of a mile of being right. DAMNED lucky.

Our brains are good at dealing with distances that help us kill something to eat. Basically, 1, maybe 200 yards and closer. After that, you progressively suck worse.

10B light years? Yeah. COMPLETELY meaningless other than for math purposes.

That's a really good point. I have taken an interest in this stuff lately (because of the OT) and it's just mind blowing.

But at least I know enough to have my mind blown.

Another mindblown fact? That picture is 2.5 millions of years old. We are looking at the past.?
