Two passenger jets began to take off at the same time on intersecting runways at Chicago's Midway International Airport, prompting a controller to shout over the radio for one of the pilots to halt to avoid a collision, aviation officials said Wednesday.

Southwest Airlines Flight 3828 to Tulsa, Oklahoma, had been cleared for takeoff and was speeding down the runway. At the same time, an air traffic controller saw Delta Air Lines Flight 1328 to Atlanta beginning to take off on the intersecting runway without proper clearance, the FAA said.

In the air traffic audio, the controller tells the pilots that they keep answering for each other, suggesting confusion.

The Southwest pilot later asked whether his aircraft was the one cleared for takeoff.

"Yes sir, you were," the controller responded. "You were the one. You were doing what you were supposed to be doing."

"1328" and "3828" over the radio. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to see what was going on here.

They couldn't tell the difference between Delta and Southwest on the radio?

"1328, stop, stop stop!" the controller shouted, according to audio posted on the website LiveATC.net.

"1328 stopping," the pilot answered in a calm voice, before the controller directed both planes to different taxiways.

Guess they just use the numbers over the radio.

And 1328 vs. 3828 sounds pretty close over a radio.

shite like this is the reason the military stresses sounding out each individual number.

one-three-two-eight and three-eight-two-eight

I'm not an airport runway engineer, but I have seen enough destruction derby to know that this may someday come back to bite them.

I used to fly. Normally in the terminal area, takeoff, approach and landing, full call signs are used to avoid these types of events. In cruise it really isn't a big deal.

I still use military lingo with regard to numbers today. It never gets fricked up.

I've gone upfront on my family's plane (yea, subtle brag) while cruising. I swear, sometimes I think it's a game of "who can talk the fastest".
