Restaurant bankruptcies have soared to highest level since 2009

The restaurant industry is not a sideshow. About 14 million people work in it, according to the National Restaurant Association. With $710 billion in annual sales, it’s an important part of consumer spending and accounts for about 4% of GDP. If the industry is having problems, it’s a red flag for the overall economy.

Its difficulties are not limited to just a few beat-up restaurant chains. The National Restaurant Association reported on Friday that its Restaurant Performance Index (RPI) for August fell 1% to 99.6 and is now in contraction mode (below 100 = contraction). It was the worst reading since October 2012.

The Current Situation Index fell in August to 97.7, the lowest since February 2010. Three of its four indicators declined: same-store sales, customer traffic, and labor.

So THAT'S what RPI stands for.

Not surprising. It always seems to me like there are way too many restaurants, and that restaurants in some locations are just a revolving door of failed attempts

Even without a link, I now this has to be a zerohedge article.

The restaurant industry has been expanding at a rapid pace the last five years, especially the fast casual scene. There are only so many disposable consumer dollars to go around that eventually some big losers had to occur.

It blows my mind to see how many new places have opened in New Orleans over the past five years. I had been saying for three years now that we have to have hit the saturation point, but they keep opening new places and some of them are big.

frick restaurants. I cook my own food. Cheaper and better.

To hell with these Seattle restaurants. I've voluntarily been to one since i moved here. $20 for a pizza the size of a frisbee. No thanks. We go out to places for work lunches and i dont have to pay. But its ridiculous how overpriced it is. Went to some Mexican place last week and my 2 enchiladas with rice and beans was $19. I can make a whole casserole dish of enchiladas at home for less than that

Too many restaurants are overpriced for what you get. I'm in Texas on vacation right now. Went to Waffle House yesterday and got a lot of food for $9. They have it right.

No I just hate the Seattle restaurant scene

If you like wasting money go ahead

The Las Vegas restaurant scene is the best since off strip places are always offering great value to compete.

Not in Nola that's for sure. We seem to have new places popping up like Gremlins after midnight.

Because not wanting to spend $20 for a 6 inch pizza means I'm broke

No, i am smart with my money. Go ahead and rack up credit card debt eating out at overpriced places. Ill put my money to other, more productive uses

Good. When you're 90 and on your deathbed you can think back about all of those meals you didn't spend money on and wonder what good food combinations you may have missed out on in the great big world.

How many sandwich shops can you have? This area has added WhichWich, Dibella's, Jersey Mike's, Firehouse, and Capriotti's, in addition to growth of Subway, JJ's, and Potbelly. Then, throw in your Mexican (Chipotle/Qdoba/Moe's), and burger joints (Smashburger/Five Guys/Sonic, etc) and something has to give. I guess people aren't cooking as much as they used to.
