Disregarding his politics or religion, I never liked him because of his loud-mouthed obnoxious trash talking.
I fricking hate braggadocious athletes and he was the epidomy of that. You can thank Ali for all of the a-hole obnoxious athletes of today.

Ohh then your list of favorite athletes must be pretty interesting.

we have had thousands of Americans who gave the ultimate sacrifice for people like Ali to have the platform to be a champion and a millionaire.
About 550 WWII vets alone die each day. Add the vets of wars since then to that and who gets the day's headlines? A frickin draft dodging big mouthed member of the religion of peace.
Just stick him in the ground and lets move on. Nothing to see here.

Ever hear Brees bragging about how good he is or that he's the best ever?

meanwhile, Trump, Cheney, Limbaugh and Clinton got student deferments or medical excuses to avoid Vietnam. i wonder what the difference was?

Fist of all Ali wasn't convicted of dodging the draft or draft evasion. He was convicted of refusing induction into the US Army. The conviction was also overturned by the Supreme Court. The man was stripped of his titles, falsely labeled a draft dodger, and faced public backlash for something that was eventually deemed a wrongful conviction.
Also, he never would have faced any type of combat. He would have gone on a glorified USO tour & been used by the Army as propaganda. It wasn't like he was scared of dying. If anything, his stance should have been given more weight because by far his easiest path would have been to join the Army, do his time, visit troops, take pictures, then resume his career.
Lastly, he was 25 & heavyweight champion of the world. He was recently married & trying to start a family. I don't care what you're opinion is about the draft or Vietnam War, but there is a huge difference drafting a 19 yo & a grown man in the middle of his professional career. I don't care if it's a boxer or an accountant.

WWII and Vietnam are two entirely different animals. The whole draft dodging thing to me is pretty straightforward - do you believe the US involvement in the Vietnam War was the right thing to do. If you do, then have at it. If you don't, then how can you crucify someone for refusing to go?

I don't believe he dodged the draft because of "the little guy" I believe he believed in socialism and/or communism. That's why he didn't join up.
Either way, frick him.

It was a terrible decision to go to war in Vietnam. Ali would have never picked up a gun, instead they would have used him like a Joe Lewis visiting troops, PR, fake boxing etc. Ali didn't want dead bodies on his conscious by encouraging people to join. He gave up his titles/ career everything to protest war. He was vilified and hated for it too.
That's called courage...

And he never went to jail for it.
If it were the average joe that evaded the draft at that time they'd still be in Leavenworth right now.

I don't care that Ali dodged the draft. I can see how a black man of that era might not feel all that patriotic, although many black men did serve with distinction.

Furthermore, it's documented the Nation of Islam told Ali they would follow him if he decided to enlist --- Fun Fact
Ali even with the blessing of the Nation of Islam rejected the idea of enlisting.

Did his thoughts on race mixing at least make you warm up to him a little?
