Ali was convicted of draft evasion. It's hard for me to be a fan.

I'm a huge boxing fan and truly want to root for Ali, but we have had thousands of Americans who gave the ultimate sacrifice for people like Ali to have the platform to be a champion and a millionaire. I'll take Joe Louis over Ali any day. Louis is a man with character.
On April 28, 1967, boxing champion Ali refuses to be inducted into the U.S. Army and is immediately stripped of his heavyweight title. Ali, a Muslim, cited religious reasons for his decision to forgo military service. He was sentenced to five years in prison, fined $10,000 and banned from boxing for three years. He stayed out of prison as his case was appealed and returned to the ring on October 26, 1970.

Not a fan either, way too much love going his way. I might think different if I was an adult during that time frame. To me, Tyson was the baddest man on the planet!

Nobody died in Vietnam so Ali could box.

Tyson would have eviscerated Ali.
Wouldn't even have been close.

Almost fifty years ago, time to move on.

He stood up for his convinctions, agree or not. The easy way would have been to go along and accept induction. He never would have seen a day of combat. They'd have made him a physical training instructor or sent him around on goodwill tours.

probably not, but about 58,000 died to protect his right to run his mouth off about everything bad about this country that made him into a millionaire at the same time

They also gave that sacrifice so Ali could be a conscientious dissenter, and his conviction was overturned 8-0 by the USSC on appeal, albeit on a technicality of sorts.
Additionally, Ali had a very low IQ and never would have been selected under the original draft rules, but the armed forces changed their stance on IQs below the 30th percentile (Ali was 16th percentile) and lowered it to 15th percentile as the threshold. I just have a really hard time blaming a man for not wanting to fight in Vietnam. This wasn't WWI or WWII. Hell, fighting in Afghanistan is more justifiable than Vietnam was. Vietnam was the equivalent of the Iraq War, and 95% of this board would "dodge" the frick out of that disaster.

I wouldn't fight and risk dying for a cause and country that I didn't believe in either. You only have one life to live. Would you really throw it away to support something that you hate?

The POTUS statement on Ali's death was all about his greatness in making that decision, and his willingness to stand up to authority.
What a backwards society we have.
I'm alright with Ali's greatness in sport, I'm of the belief that he changed from militant a-hole Islamist to just a religious man, and I believe he turned out to be a humbled, good human being... but the last of the things people should deify is his decision as an American citizen to defy the call of service based on his hatred of America,at the time.
ETA, you are completely delusional if you believe that decision to dodge the draft was based off of some extraordinary insight into the politics of the war, or its morality. It was made by who was handling him at the time, the Nation of Islam

This, for the most part. In fact, this is why people in the armed forces get so much respect from people like me. I KNOW I wouldn't volunteer to do what they do. Ali avoiding the draft is not an indictment on those who served, and if anything, it makes their sacrifice that much more noble IMO.

I have a very negative view of Clay, but it has nothing to do with wars or drafts.
