My unit cut off the other night. Checked breakers and everything ok. Went in attic where unit is and noticed a burning smell. Have someone coming out today to look at. My first thought was maybe the blower motor burned up or an electrical short. Any AC expert opinions?

I've had the capacitor changed on the outside unit before, but is there one on the inside unit as well?

Update.

Guy said some low voltage transformer in the inside unit is bad. Part of the furnace. Also said furnace burn chamber is all rusted out, which I can see it is. said has to replace furnace for safety reasons and that should fix problem.

Does this sound right? Not even using the furnace yet, but some part connected to it can't be replaced unless whole furnace is done because it's a safety deal? I'm all about safety for my family. I don't want to worry about carbon monoxide poisoning.

You oughta get a bid on replacing the whole air handler unit in that case.

This is one of those cases where you do better with a parts changer than a real tech.

All you need is a $25 part, but since you have a rusted out furnace most companies are going to tell you you have to replace it. Do you HAVE to replace it? No, Should you? Probably.

^^This!

And if you replace it, do everything.

Well the home warranty people should cover it hopefully. Guy said they shouldn't have any reason not to.

I was just curious if the guy was feeding me stuff just to replace the whole thing and make more money. He said he had no choice as it was a safety reason. Wasn't allowed to repair it.
