Do you feel guilty? There are aspects of the job that I don't necessarily feel I can meet upon entry, but I'm willing to learn the necessary trades during my free time.

I am currently in a job that when I accepted it I was pretty nervous because of the step up from what I was previously doing and the difference in responsibility so I understand where you are coming from. Just know that they will teach you what you need the rest will be on you to sponge everything up and have the swagger to keep your cool when you are in over your head.

Or they are shitty managers who don't really care, who think their underlings are replaceable cogs that anyone can do and don't really understand what it takes to do the details of the job, and they just picked a convienant choice rather than a qualified one.

Not saying this nesscessarily applies to the OP, but let's not pretend that all hiring managers even know the role they are hiring for, much less being capable of picking out the winners from a ~45 min interview.

learn more every day.
be well organized and polite.
Don't drink at lunch or smoke or do anything to offend anyone.

Learn something every morning. Learn something every afternoon.

You can do it if you stay focused. Don't let up for an instant.
be early for work and wait two minutes to leave after everyone else.

If there are measurables, meet them.

90% of my success has been stepping into opportunities I had very little clue how to do, but I busted my arse and learned how quickly enough to where no one was the wiser. I actually thrive in those situations. I get bored easily, so having to learn something new or figure something out usually brings out the best in me. I feel like this ended up being a subtle brag - not my intention - just wanted to give you the motivation to just work hard and make it happen.

It's called the Peter Principle

quote:

in which the selection of a candidate for a position is based on the candidate's performance in their current role, rather than on abilities relevant to the intended role. Thus, employees only stop being promoted once they can no longer perform effectively, and "managers rise to the level of their incompetence."

That's why younger people get so frustrated at work, everyone seems incompetent, and they are right!

All these older people get to a position that they are shitty, and then act as a road block for more capable people who have to either leave the company to pass them or wait for them to die.

Take the job and then work your arse off to learn whatever you need to be qualified for it ASAP.

I outright lied about my skills and qualifications to get two jobs and it worked out fine. If you're articulate, good at problem solving, have good cultural and social awareness, have the ability to retain and apply new information, and have a good person to train you, you can do anything. Put the work in.
