I have a sneaking suspicion they didn't design that from scratch.

Do the Russians ever actually finish anything?

even the NASA engineers say that. NASA is a civilian organization, not military. They joked that the Russians probably just mailed a letter requesting the blue prints for the shuttle and got them.

NASA is too busy trying to reach out to muslims to make them feel better.

The Russian engineers knew that NASA had a great design in place so they made some improvements to it like removal of engines on the rear because the boosting rocket completely got it into space unlike NASA. Also completed unmanned flight back in the 80s, cool stuff

The Buran was a good design, but it had more military aspects than our shuttles. These Russian Shuttles also had Jets and could fly rather than just glide, and were designed to carry weapons payloads and military satellites and such. They came out, right when the Cold War was ending.

At least we know where another airframe is.

Just in case a giant meteor is on a collision course for earth and we need to throw together a hasty disaster aversion mission.

Why would a shuttle need jets to fly? Seems to me there would be more cons such as added weight and risk of explosion on re-entry for jet fuel that outweight the pros.

Nice read. I enjoy reading about the conditions of former Soviet bases, towns and technologies. It's like a peak into a post apocalyptic world

Since both of our programs are abandoned, maybe we can buy their old stuff and make some sort of "frankenshuttle"!.....
