this is a super great idea, used by many. you get a steady paycheck to cover the bills, plus state retirement, and depending on your willingness to work hard outside, can make some really good money in your side practice.

problem is, DA and ADA jobs are very political, so you risk losing the job every 4 years if someone new comes in who puts in his guys, or you have to suck up alot. Also, frequently it requires connections to get the job in the first place.

you also run into alot of ADAs who do nothing outside, and just work the minimum at the DAs office.

Because the reality is that you cannot have a side practice while being an ADA. Especially with the Parishes you listed.

I am not trying to discourage you. Just speaking from experience. Set your goals a little higher.

Another problem you could run into as an ADA is being tied up to a chair in a room full of explosives where a guy in a suit has to decide to save you or the district attorney.

In hick Parishes maybe. How many ADAs do you know in heavy caseload Parishes that have a viable private practice?

Ever asked yourself why they lead in landing those jobs?

I only practice in hick parishes, bro. those guys have tons of extra time for a side practice. most don't hit it too hard though.

Not at all. And that makes sense. I am in no way trying to discourage you. You have lots of time to weigh your options.

Unless you mean the bottle, I agree, they don't hit it very hard.

I was just responding to this young man's indication that he would practice in one of the bigger Parishes.

Because it doesn't. Law school does not teach you how to be a lawyer. Southern is a way to a means. I went to LSU, and I have never had a client ask me where I went to school or what my class rank was...thank God.
