A piece of American history has emerged from the receding waters of Shasta Lake in California.

The U.S. Forest Service Shasta Trinity Unit said the Higgins Boat, known as “The Ghost Boat” from World War II surfaced in the lake as its water dried up.

The boat surfaced in the fall of 2021.

The Forest Service said the marked numbers ‘31-17’ confirms it is a boat assigned to the attack transport U.S.S Monrovia, which was General Patton’s headquarters during the invasion of Sicily.

General Dwight Eisenhower was also on the Monrovia during this time. The ship was reportedly used in the invasion of Tarawa.

The circumstances of the sinking of the “Ghost Boat” remain a mystery, the Forest Service said.

The boat will be removed from the lake, restored and displayed at a museum in Nebraska. Efforts to restore the boat will be done to preserve as much of the integrity of the boat as possible.

California will be sure to find whomever is in charge and put a lien on their property for failed payment of personal property taxes.

I live in Redding, it’s a shame what that lake looks like so we can send water to SoCal

I don't understand. Shasta Dam drains into the Sacramento River which ultimately flows into San Francisco Bay. Please explain how SoCal can impact the flow out of Shasta dam. Are you just saying that farming in the Sacramento River valley are taking up all the Shasta Lake water resources?

That's awesome. The Mississippi is very low right now. Might be a good opportunity to make some finds like that again.

WTH. This needs to be put in the WWII Museum in New Orleans.

Let that be a warning to any area that is giving up future water rights.

Why not the National WW2 Museum in New Orleans? After all, the USS Monrovia was a Crescent City class attack transport ship.

Higgins was a resident of Columbus Nebraska and they have created a memorial to him.

Andrew Jackson Higgins National Memorial

Incidentally, I passed over the Platte river in Columbus yesterday. Columbus is approximately 950 miles from the source of the Platte in Wyoming and the river had not one drop of water in it's dry sand bed at that point.
